Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Did ExxonMobil PIP'ed Environment? Was BLM Ignored as a Technical Contributor?

Let me ask some simple questions and for honest answers:

  1. Environment: Has ExxonMobil been PIPing environment causes for last few decades? I am now a true believer to doing everything for the benefit of the environment.
  1. BLM: What about the Black Lives Matter movement support, messages and conversations from the top and the middle level management all the way to the bottom level? There was always plenty of hoop and "care" around United Way events. Did EM treat BLM like it treats its technical contributors?
  1. COVID-19 Safety: Were we so busy holding handrails and claiming safety comes first that we didn't notice the threat called COVID-19? Where did we want zero safety incidence managers go? Was it always about parroting Dallas messages and had nothing to do about real employee safety?

Sad pseudo-political post.
Here's a fact borne out in every EM action: It is a Class Struggle.
US has it easy: they can spot the lower Classes by the color of their Skin.
Except maybe in WV, IA, WY, UT, etc.
Ironically, the Ottomans had their Slavs - classed by their Paleness.

There ain't no easy way out this mess.
But it's Class that counts. EM has none.

@1gdd+16TgjnO5 agreed with everything but 1st paragraph. Remember get woke go broke. XOM is already going broke.

On BLM - DW’s forced and delayed statement was tantamount to All Lives Matter, tasteless and tone deaf - as expected. While our competitors positioned themselves on the right side of history, I wish he’d just stayed quiet.

On environment - where to begin? Fracking for plastics isn’t the most sustainable business model; but that’s the hill they chose to die on. The sustainability initiative at the Chemical Co was thwarted. Any hints at GHG management have fallen to the sides, in favor of research theater. Zero carbon sequestration. Methane and flaring still an issue. Our “partnerships” with universities and research labs are nothing more than greenwashing. And more money spent in commercials and lobbying than in the future. No change of ever considering renewables. Deep down denial is still pervasive in the old guard and those who choose to anoint as new managers. The latest attempt to gaslight is the promotion of delay by embracing the “dual challenge” and promoting propaganda films like SwitchON. They’d think the line that we work to to provide energy to the poor is enough to appease all of us we understand a transition is underway.

This company hasn’t reconciled its contradictions and will perish as the last dinosaur.

Listen I'm appalled by backwards XOM and how they have handled the pip to disguise layoffs and I think a reckoning is and should come to restructure the executives and management.

That being said I do think BLM is racial politics that XOM needs to stay away from. Calling people racist because they don't support your cause is wrong and won't work. That term is so overused today anyways and is used to guilt people which I think no longer works.

People need to quit acting like victims and realize how blessed they are to be in America compared to where their ancestors came from. If you don't like it then leave.

The problem with working at the campus during the covid19 pandemic is the ratio of bathrooms to people. Even with a reduced office population you still have people bunched up in there sh–ting and coughing next to each other. There's no doubt XOM employees have already been infected this way, many simply not knowing because they're asymptomatic.

@1sgc+16TgjnO5, newsflash, we do practice affirmative action at ExconMobil for Blacks, Latinos and women - there are recruiting targets we need to hit. Even if it is just to make it a more attractive workplace to educated white males, most of whom are woke. White women do well, and so do Spanish speakers from Spain. And Cubans. Blacks are typically poorly ranked and their careers stall. Look at the VP level and tell me if you see anything other than blinding white, male and female.

Such a dismissive comment, don't you feel smug that you know what BLM stands for and others are just ignorant /s.

Many people can feel for the black community and want changes across society for what one could be described as lack of opportunity and descrimination. Coming in and saying we need to promote or actively higher more blacks IS affirmative action and is doing nothing for their cause except giving reparations.

It is interesting that some think that BLM has to do with politics and affirmative action. It does show how ignorant ExxonMobil world could be.

In the rest of the progressive world, BLM has been seen to remind us of systematic racism and discrimination problems against blacks, seen as challenges and hardship black people go through, and no matter how nice we all wish to be relaxing the fact that white privilege exists.

Try to put yourself in a black person's shoes and living life on a day to day basis and being judged by white, browns, Chinese everywhere you go.

I was surprised when we were told to come back to the Campus in June. For GOD's sake, how many times have we heard we are a risk adverse company? How many times have we been told it takes time to maneuver a tanker ship? What's the rush? If you are an EM employee, how many times have you heard or seen SAFETY FIRST? BP, Chevron, & Shell...said hey WFH until this COVID c-ap passes. BUT NO you SLAVE EM employees we don't care about your safety, get your a– back to the office because we don't trust you to work from home. You lazy lima beans... Really, what is the damn rush? Nothing to do with a tax incentive for personnel occupancy at the a campus? Someone should report on that. (looking over my shoulder...this is truly anonymous right?...me saying that should tell the world how fearful EM employees are about expressing their true thoughts).

I'm with XOM on this one, I don't ascribe to politics, especially woke politics. This thread is a waste of people's time.

Re: BLM: Lip service. Not doing everything it can to hire Black engineers or promote black employees. Somehow they don't move forward as much. Truth be told, the areas it is active in the US are mostly white, and the skills (engineering) do not have high Black representation. But it could be doing more, like recruit at historically Black colleges.

How is this not affirmative action? Should we not be recruiting the best and brightest, not holding ourselves to standards for racial quotas and giving out Reparations?

Ive known many intelligent and sharp black engineers that have moved just as quickly as any white or Asian engineer that I've worked with.

So much in your post ... trying to respond:

Re: Environment: XOM always went as close as possible to the line imposed by law without crossing it. Never pretended to care for the environment, always trying to write the laws to its advantage. But never consciously crossing them once written. Dont like it,, but fair game IMHO

Re: COVID-19: Disgrace. In SARS and MERS we used to have our own tests, medications and processes, aligned with CDC and science. Now we are just aping the Texas governors and the US presidents unscientific, politically motivated nonsense. Shame on our scientific heritage.

Meh - corporations should stay out of politics and as an Equal Opportunity Employer, it should be unnecessary for EM to recite all of that "woke" cr@p and create all of those stupid Employee Resource Groups.

Spot on. It seems like XOM just pretends to care but when it comes down to all the environmental and social issues the care, concern and “alignment” of actions is totally missing - even the safety and health of employees is not important . The leadership is totally missing on these issues and it’s up to us if we stick around with this company to be the leaders that we want to see. Some sites are doing more than others but the campus has been terrible.
