Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Allstate layoffs are both the literal and symbolic microcosms of the systematic erosion of this country.

This is not a political issue, per se. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians....no one has clean hands in this situation. This is not partisan. This is not division.

This country used to be a place where one's basic needs could be obtained through a job with company like Allstate. A solid, middle-class life (with opportunities of upward mobility) where one could afford to send their kids to good, safe schools, secure quality healthcare at affordable costs, purchase nutritionally-rich food and cultivate meaningful relationships in both their professional and residential communities.

Now?

Allstate sends thousands of jobs overseas, taking advantage of reduced costs (payroll/wages) but inevitably sacrificing the quality of its products/services.

They gleefully pursue endless stock buyback programs, artificially pumping up the stock's value (thereby enriching those lucky enough to own the stock), but sacrificing their own employees' wages (and jobs, in some cases) in the process.

They consistently reduce the "benefits" (as if these things, in the richest country in the world, shouldn't be qualified as rights), making healthcare options more costly, PTO days less valuable (Didn't use them? Sorry, you now lose them) and retirement plans less worthwhile...all of which "save" more money for the company but sacrifice the health, well-being and self-dignity of the company's employees.

If you still think these companies "care" about their employees and would put a halt to these life-debilitating practices in the middle of a pandemic, you simply haven't been paying attention or, perhaps more likely, you're consciousness won't allow you to confront the shear morbidity of this reality.

And if it makes anyone feel "better" (it shouldn't), you are not alone. Allstate might be one of the more egregious and brazen examples, but it has been happening everywhere, in every sector.

The solution?

One, accept the truth/reality of the situation. Educate yourself. Get engaged in your local communities. Treat one another with dignity, respect, empathy and KINDNESS. Don't let mass media (of all platforms), politicians (of all parties) and corporate boardroom directors (of all companies) trick you into thinking someone else is responsible for the despair/anger/depression you have been feeling. They all have skin in the game and rely on scapegoats and false narratives to distract the populace's attention from centering on the real problem: Themselves.

Two, don't be tricked/swayed by social media, which is a toxic environment infested with unscrupulous actors (from all political parties and power-rich communities) who care only about lining and protecting their own pockets.

Finally, remember this: The power is always with the people. Don't read into that as a push for Unions (this is neither pro or anti union). As stated earlier, get involved and have a dialogue with your community members and you will soon realize you have more in common with your neighbors and co-workers than you think, which will lead to an exchanging of ideas and a greater sense of the power and influence we all have in relation to the seemingly omnipotent (they are not) companies for which we work.

Jobs, healthcare, communities, schools, livelihoods....these can all be saved. But as we have seen at Allstate, time is of the essence and the status quo is no longer a solution.

Filter the politics out of this..... What is going on happens when stockholders are the driver for any corporate action....for profit. Other insurance companies that aren’t mutually held are doing the same things. Allstate is just late to the game and trying to play catch up.....
