At least Chevron is calling it a layoff and giving real severance instead of the NSI performance BS.

@ziq this is unfortunately true. I had a mentor who was naturally a great guy, spoke his mind, genuinely cared about others, and didn't fit into the Exxon mold. But then he became my supervisor. And he started following the company line, sounding more like what HR/Legal wanted him to say.

It was sad seeing him change like that. I could tell he was holding back thoughts and "PR'ing" them when he used to just say them. I don't know who he is anymore.

Chevron management has more integrity than XOM management will ever have. And that rot in character has spread all the way down to first line supervisors at XOM.
