Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Grow Up

I'm sorry if you got MLRP'd, but, with few exceptions, you probably deserved it. I have yet to see a separation or early retirement that wasn't well deserved, myself and most of my co-workers bid you a fond farewell. Most everyone is leaving with a fat pension. Appreciate how good you had it for so long and get a hobby other than coming in to work to s— the life out of your co-workers. Also, you do know that XOM isn't the only company reducing their workforce, right? It's remarkable it's taken this long since oil prices have been in the cellar since 2014, yet we've carried you along all this time.

And for all the haters that blame upper management for the present state of the company, if only we'd put you in charge all those years ago.

A previous poster is accurate. the average rating is 50%. The whole must average 50%. Last year many were put at 34%, or 11% but when below 10% leave, that means everyone remaining drops down 10%. Previous 11% become 1% previous 18% become 8%. EVERYONE should assume you are going to be 10 to 20% lower this year and next year. It is not safe be be in the bottom third. Even the top third drops down.

Haha! You sound a little butt hurt that you missed the pension. No need to take it out on everyone by blasting the fact that you can't function as part of a team. Don't worry, your "delightful" self will be MLRPd soon enough!

The ranking system is an execution tool. The true org design comes from the HR SWP (Strategic Workforce Planning). Companies evolve over time. And so does their SWP. If your skills are inline with their strategy (as defined on the SWP), then chances are the reviews will be ok. Trust me on this one.

So you are confirming that management is full of lies and corruption, manipulating the ranking system?

If you've been getting good reviews and are now suddenly MLRP'd, it only means you managers over the years didn't have the guts to tell you that you were marginal. Management has played games over the years, stacking people up at 11%, so they weren't in the bottom 10% or at 34% so you would be told that you're in the middle third. The old ranking system was broken and being gamed, the new systems, while not perfect, is at least getting rid of the low-performers. We aren't running a charity here.

My manager gave me a stunning review and a nice raise. When I got my pip he and everyone told me I did nothing wrong. I was told I wouldn't pass the pip. Anyone hired less than 2 years ago got this treatment. At least I got a good severance package and with 25 years experience I can choose any company I want to work for. So long s—ers!

Well compensated???? You are aware that at the sites (refinery, chemicals) the majority forced out was NOT engineers... non degree personnel make a lot less than degree and did the majority of the grunt work... being forced out before 60 is a big hit on the pension and most of the sites are located where jobs are hard to find right now... so DON’t tell me those people were well compensated....

That’s interesting because I know of quite a few People who were told by their managers it was not likely they would pass a PIP even if they did everything required. Why are you trying to save face here? Anyone can see what a lay-off is.

We'll, the world moves. This is the new standard. Just like my other OP user stated, it is a free world. Those employees have been fairly compensated. Plus, the PIP period is not over yet. What if they pass? Oops, will they erase all of the negativity they have posted?

OP here, "knowing my audience", really? What's your point? Was I supposed to post something everyone agreed with and upvoted? Where the company is now s—s for everyone, MLRP'd or not. No one made a conscious decision to be here. Everyone loves to be the Monday morning armchair quarterback and call out upper management for past decisions that didn't work out. If you're not happy at EM, go apply somewhere else, it's a free country.

OP do not need to get so defensive, XOM did a lot of good things but when you compare them to the market they are ranked at the bottom. That is why Chevron was ranked higher than them and XOM was MLRP'd from the Dow.

We should not have doubled down on fossil fuels and we should not have increased hiring targets so dramatically over the last few years. Doubling down on single-use plastic and gas guzzling vehicles is not what consumers want. Assuming the 2 billion people are trying to enter the same middle class here in America is foolish; since many of those countries have different cultures and lifestyles that will not necessary mimic the American way of life. Additionally we believe those 2 billion extra people that DW talks about to enter the middle class will do so by spending money on XOM products which is not true. Many of those companies will be foreign-based companies that can employ management and labor at a much lower cost than XOM can.

XOM is making the same stupid decision Mobil did back when we invested in a communist country in Venezuala and lost all of our assets there. Meanwhile you go to the recruitment page where the only hiring we are doing is in China. How stupid can management be, I guess they didnt learn their lesson with Venezuala. All we are doing is giving China our intellectual property so they can replicate and build our site without having to invest in technology.

@pdh+16IB6PoA either you are not working hard enough or your performance needs significant improvement (just like Darren) but XOM stock is down over 3% in August while the S&P 500 is up 6% during the dame period. Pitiful! Get to work and stay off these discussion boards!!!

This is outright disgusting. Yeah every company is doing workforce reduction but at least they are honest enough to say it’s lay-off not “pip”. And what fat pension? Majority of the people let-go were not retirement eligible. You are either ignorant or a shameless liar

The comment on upper management is laughable. Yeah great after years of strategic blunder and millions of compensation every year they cannot be criticized...

I personally know one person that was MLRP’ed that definitely didn’t deserve it. Both that person’s direct supervisor and one level up manager both said they wish they could’ve stopped it. A few others I know that were PIL’ed were “not notably bad, but I have no idea what they actually did.” Meanwhile, many more people who are nothing more than Yammer cowboys(and girls), as well as the usual crowd of toxic supervisors and “make up work to look busy/important” people still remain.

The difference between xom reducing workforce and other companies is other companies did not throw employees under the bus in a dishonest way to save their pride or hide a lay-off.

It seems like it would be hard to get much work done when your keeping up with why everyone is PIP’d all over the world. It would take a lot of research. I wholeheartedly believe people that come here are being honest when they say that they had positive feedback, were not ranked low but suddenly PIP’d. I’ve seen a few in our area that were not low performers so why come here trying to save your reputation? We seem to have people from everywhere saying the same and some are still employed with xom. The company has changed and it’s not an improvement.

You're making some assumptions which have no basis. No issues with the person I see in the mirror and not trying to "peck" my way ahead, I don't have to. Happy to be where I am and contribute on a daily basis. If I got put in MLRP, I'd take my lumps and move on.
