Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Why was the 7 nm fubar a surprise?

I haven’t that answer presented here. And while we’re at it, what is the issue and when will it really be fixed? Or is it “time to throw in the (we keep our own fabs) towel”?

I’ve worked at Intel twice through acquisition. As much as I hated it’s culture, Intel has strength in quite a few areas technically. There are good engineers (especially outside California). Maybe your grade levels are too low to have interacted with them.

Because the bad news are always swept under the rug in there.

@5dyk+16HIIv2e its all relative. the people leaving are far better than the dregs and politicians staying

@5cbi+16HIIv2e no, when I say rock star, I mean technically. They were all decent but not amazing.

a large part of intel being a c-appy place to work is because it actually suppresses talent in favor of politics

@4zzj+16HIIv2e That is precisely the point, to be a “rock star” at Intel requires a—kissing and politics, technical skills are actually a liability. But those technical skills are what precisely gets people into superior companies like Apple/Google/etc, so those good people leave and Intel becomes even more of a clown show.

to the clown making the "incompetent clown show" comment: all of these cash-cow companies that are now doing their own chips are filled with ex-Intel engineers, many recently hired. I personally know ex-Intel at Apple, Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia, AMD, Tesla, Amazon, ARM, Marvell and small fries like Si-Five, Micron, Microchip, Honeywell. Those Intel employees were mostly decent but mostly not rock-stars even inside Intel.

Intel designs do not need the fabs. TSMC and Samsung can source all of Intel's IC needs.

"In reality Intel design teams are completely incompetent clown shows that were only able to compete in the past because of their 3 year process lead. Nowadays they are like a secondary cancer metastasizing from the primary fab cancer. Going fabless would be instant death for Intel design."
This is not a secret anymore but a common knowledge. Splitting the company without destroying it is a monumental challenge that no CEO will undertake

No surprise, vapor-ware to inflate the stock and get the bonus. Self serving cycle.

All the "going fabless" talk assumes the fabs are weighing down the design teams.

Well, ditching the fabs would be fatal for Intel. Intel designs need it's fabs and the fabs need it's design.
