Well folks I have been browsing these boards for some time now and I decided to interview at different companies that are in direct competition with XOM as well as companies in completely different industries over the last few weeks. I have been doing interviews in huddle rooms in the office buildings in the middle of my work day with no issues. I received my first job offer from a large biotech company this past Friday and I plan to have more offers this coming week!
The job market is tough right now, I applied all over the United States and landed one interview with a prominent refining company (big in renewables) that I expect to get an offer from this coming week as well. Most jobs though are not in Oil & Gas or Petrochemical but in biotech and general manufacturing mostly. This makes it hard for us to compete since they are mostly batch operation solids/liquid handling while we come from continuous operations. The job I received is in biotech/healthcare and is located far away from the Gulf Coast. Luckily I have good background at XOM to be a good fit in this company so I received an offer from this large but stable company.
I am an engineer by training and I am on the technical ladder. I have had good feedback all year and I am not in the group that could be laid off in October. However I came across the TMTS and HW3 a few weeks ago and also reviewed some 2nd Quarter stewardship packages that I have access to and identified that they are looking at making a decision at Corporate plan in October to reduce headcount by as much as 33% in one year. I play chess and I try to anticipate several moves ahead and it doesn't take a big leap to realize DW is going to elect to cut and save his dividend because that matters the most in any company (sarcasm).
The manufacturing site that I work at was advertising that they would drop the targets as high as 33% in Engineering and Process Technical and roughly 10% in Operations and Maintenance in one year. This is at a site that is cash positive for the year by the way. This woke me up; if XOM is willing to cut a cash positive manufacturing site resources to that amount clearly the company does not know what to do and is desperate. Some other things I read was that they are looking to lay off all people in the Improve groups at the site (projects) and essentially reduce the technical and engineering 'bench' to virtually nothing. These decisions will be communicated by the Operations VP/Regional Directors come October to the sites.
I suggest everybody on this board (including supervisors, dept. head, managers, and executives) to begin updating your resumes immediately. If you do survive this round you will be laid off mid/late next year if your group does gets reduced since there will be no place to put you and your job will be obsolete. This is not personal this is just simply business and supply/demand for labor that the company does not need at the moment. If you want to play 'the game' you will try not to cut your headcount and fight for your people (no matter how bad they might be) since that will protect you. Still, that will only bide you more time for the inevitable to happen to you.
If you wait you will regret it, the jobs are drying up fast and many of the companies hiring right now are preparing for increased demands in products in this new working environment. For example WFH has forced home products like paint (resins), shingles, lumber, laundry detergent, semiconductors (computers), food and packaging, vaccines, etc. to increase and companies right now are hiring to meet the demand. If you wait the companies will staff for this new demand and you will be left behind like the people laid off from the big steel companies in the mid-1900s. Does not matter how good of a manager or engineer you are, simply the market will not have any positions available.
I heard the saying that Texas is West Virginia just 50 years behind. I partially agree with this statement however I would say that 50 years is up due to COVID and that time has finally come. Expect the suburbs/towns of Houston/Woodlands/Beaumont/Baton Rouge to have increased crime and unemployment in the near future.
I wish you all the best of luck!
