Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Halfway on the PIP -

Dear All,
It’s halfway on the PIP process.
Below are my questions:

  • - Are things getting better in your PIP?
  • Do you think you will make it?
  • Are you in UBD, UIS, UOG or XTO?
  • will there be another lay offs coming Q4?

It doesn't matter how successful you are on the PIP. You WILL be gone in November.

You'll have to sign the waiver when converting to PIL. But you don't have to notify XOM once you land another job before 10/31 and in that case, you'll have 2 salary sources at the same time. The waiver says EM "may" discontinue the compensation, it does not say "will". I've heard of PIP'ed folks who landed on jobs immediately and now they have 2 salaries.

@1owc+16EaOTrl - if you convert to PIL during your PIP, then I am certain that you will have to sign the same waiver as everyone else (perhaps modified to cover a shortened time period, still ending on October 31). If that's the case, then in the set of documents you sign will be a requirement that you notify EM if you commence employment with another company during the PIL period. If you don't get your new job through Right Management, then it's up to you to decide whether you feel compelled to inform EM.

For those that converted, did you still have to sign the waiver? Can you take another job while their outplacement firm is “helping” you, and if so, do you forfeit the remainder of the pay?

My boss has spent every PIP review session (and every other conversation) alternating between the carrot and the stick trying to cajole and/or badger me into quitting the PIP. I’m convinced that he promised to reduce my headcount to list on his very limited set of accomplishments, and is now freaking out that I’ve been plowing through the Plan he gave me and the appearance I might pass.

This week’s revelation is that he tells me that even if I completely fulfill the PIP, it might not be enough to save my job. WTF?

I converted to PIL last week and signed up for the Outplacement service. I get to meet a lot of displaced workers within that service and it's my support system right now. That program is awesome, keeps me optimistic and resilient unlike when I was doing PIP where I felt so humiliated and unworthy. The outplacement service will help and will get you back on your feet. There's a lot of jobs out there where you will be happier.

It’s not a big deal to sign the PIL. Attorney told me the same thing lawyers posted when these threads started.

Similar comment to others - you can get unemployment even if you take PiL. I specifically asked my supervisor if that is an option and they said the company will not object to any unemployment claims. So after your 3 months of pay, you can jump onto unemployment if you are still job hunting.

@1mcw+16EaOTrl You should still have no problem getting unemployment if you take PIL.

Mowed my supervisor's yard last week. Things much better this week! I'm going to PIP out for sure now. I'm in XYZ. Most definitely there will be more layoffs in 4Q, 1Q, 2Q and 3Q of every year. XOM has lost it's soul. So sad!

If you are in the midst of the PIP option - tell them now you want the PiL option.
Reason: PIP unreasonable and exploiting (says your lawyer) and PiL time restriction equally unreasonable and exploiting (says your lawyer).
I heard this had good results - that is, the PiL in effect and better for you.

Good luck @1mcw+16EaOTrl

I may be on the same path as you I keep seeing the signs here in GP. Too many people being brought back here to Houston as projects have been cancelled or delayed. It’s tough to make the PIP goals when the work is slowing down. We’re getting ready to delay the project I’m on and their maybe no place to go next.

To @1mcw+16EaOTrl, you can get unemployment even taking the PiL. ExxonMobil explicitly states in the waiver that they will not contest your unemployment claim. It is not a real unforced resignation. You will have to wait until after the last day on payroll to file your claim. You should be able to leave the PiP and accept the PiL for the remainder of the 3 months (now 2 left).

@1mcw+16EaOTrl Best of luck. I’m still working mine in GP but with all the projects being delayed and defunded I’m not sure if it’s worth staying. I have a feeling the next round we’ll see a large reduction here in Houston as there’s no work right now. It’s been hard to work on pip goals when you are supporting a small project and we have 2x too many as they shove people places.

Yup - I’m a month in and about to bail. I was told it would be really hard to be fired during the PiP (short of committing a crime) so I figured I’d hold out to the end and get unemployment. I’m planning on leaving the state and have enough money saved up to take my time and find another job so I figured why not.

But man, not worth it. I’ve been trying not to break myself up by beating against the mountain that is my PiP assignment and my supervisors eye-roll worthy criticism but I don’t think the unemployment is worth it for two more months of this.

I am just about ready to give up on my PIP. I submit many weekly mandatory reports to track my progress, the one that we sign and send to HR is another story. My PIP says I should never have any delayed deliverable, whatsover and they are just waiting for me to make a mistake. No, we're not yet half way, 2 more ruthless months. What to do!

Just to be clear - the word 'legal' is different in Texas.
And from EM tax implications and statements, the PIP system as a layoff is a 10 year class action.
In any case - TikTok talking about buying us out.

@uuc+16EaOTrl - yep. Apart from the fact that you have to convince a faceless group of people that you have jumped from "NSI", over "NI" and into "Good", this is the largest concern. Your NSI ranking this year will be a millstone around your neck for the next 5 years. If at any time your ranking falls back into the NSI category, then you face immediate termination of employment. Considering that this year's ranking system was completely f****d up to achieve the 8-10% NSI and PIP/PIL target, good luck with avoiding the same problem between now and 2025!

Even if you pass this follows you for for five years. They will just do it on the next cut.

I don’t think they have to let anyone pass Out of Houston. There are no laws that say they do. What they did was unethical but not illegal.

Sleazy but legal

The only reason a very small % of PIPed employees may be saved will to be show on paper that it was not a lay-off to avoid any legal battles. It may not have to do anything with the actual performance improvement so stop fooling yourself.

Accept the fact that passing of PIP will be a lottery just so corporation doesn't have legal liabilities, ...but what a lottery! — it is a curse to continue in the same rotten pond until someone finds a reason to get rid of you.
