Barnes and Noble is getting ready. This is why they are terminating so many. Sales are down and they can not meet payroll. The company lacks the funds to do marketing/promotions to get customers back in the store. They are not forecasting an uptick in business with the Holidays. This is why they are not keeping us on furlough until then. They are cutting their losses in hopes that Elliot can find a purchaser and/or cover the company’s debts.

Anybody who stays- deserves what they get.
B&N will NOT fold
Stop spending money there and it will !
B&N will NOT fold.
Mr. Daunt is cost cutting as he did in Great Britain.
Leaner meaner stores.
I don't think they'll be closing. This is how Waterstones is run. This was the plan from the beginning. It's really unfortunate that Daunt is so dishonest. The needlessly confusing new career path system of clusters and specialists is the indicator. He will favor a few managers and then a handful of part timers and favorites who do all the heavy lifting. The stores will go to sh– but Elliott has a massive amount of money. I'm guessing if sales don't go up in a year they'll sell the debt and liquidate. But as far as a plan is concerned, this was always it. Cut staff to the bone. Corona was just the catalyst to do it. If you're still there, don't believe a word anyone says. If they say they're putting you on a career path, ask for a raise. If they won't give it to you, get out.
The layoffs were mostly at the store level, especially booksellers. By setting up crazy criteria that employees have to have open schedules a number of people quit. Others that could not meet this criteria were terminated. They got rid of excellent weekend employees like me. After all everyone should drop their lives and any other employment for a part time minimum wage job.
Did they fire the Vice President of Stores? Never see him around or on the BN Corp page?
For a company that is “closing “, they have a very large staff of corporate employees in a vast array of job titles, even after the layoffs. Take a look at Linked In.
Yes they will fold by end of year.
Sounds like BN has given up already.
Good !
When I was "separated" yesterday my manager, who was a good manager in all fairness to her, did not sound hopeful. She said if I ever wanted to work seasonal I was welcome back but she didn't think she would be allowed to hire for the holidays. I loved my store but not the corporation in general. The staff who have been kept on are struggling everyday because they are not being given the tools to succeed. I dont think its a good sign they aren't holiday hiring. The tiny staff they have wouldn't be able to keep up.
A contact at one store states that they are giving the furloughed people a chance to come back. This is the level of delusion we are working with. Total and complete oblivion. Down with BN.
Yes, according to management—at least in my store—sales are at about 60% of normal & used books in the 6 or so Sales Annexes have tanked. Is the information in the O.P. direct knowledge or gossip? If it’s true, then they’re only keeping a skeleton crew around until closures are finalized?
Part timers deserve what they get.
They knew how the company treated employees.
They chose to work there.
Well, I guess if you need some extra cash and like to be berated while you work, it's a part time job option.
