Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

As a July new hire, the performance reviews exercise was well underway before your onboarding. So you have some run time to set your course and perform. When EM cast their nets on organizational changes, they do not target any one unit, they cross all companies. As previously stated you should always be prepared in case things do not work out, but that should be a norm in the base case. Like in track, don't waste much time looking over your shoulder and focus on what is in front of you.

New hires were ranked again other new hires to determine who to let go. They didn't rank them versus company employees that are clearly superior to them knowing company standars.

Cuts in EMIT certainly US-specific.
And true what was said previously - background in Exxon Mobil IT is not a positive career-wise.
As example - their version of 'Agile' implemented first for Ops Support teams.
Not for Development teams (not that there are many).
And it has been a shambles.

They are cutting newer hires to save the company money. Cutting them before they are vested in pension and 401k. It is c-appy but that’s who we now work for. They want the younger ones gone and the older employees gone. EM is a company with no integrity!

Former EMIT (left 6 years ago), emit doesn’t do anything for your career externally. Being “good at XOM processes” has no value to other companies, would suggest getting out now lay-off or not.

New hires have been included in the “layoff” and it’s something that I have not seen before. I was ranked my first year but told it didn’t count and was a practice run to introduce you to the ranking process. That was ten years ago and I’ve always heard the same for other new hires. This year new hires (with less than one year) have been ranked and let go.

It’s anyone’s guess right now. I told a new hire that interned with my group previously that they should stay on their toes and be prepared to start searching for another entry level role at a moment’s notice. My advice would be to stay connected with your university’s career services department in case you need to start the interview process over again.

Nothing is "standard" right now my friend. They're making up the rules as they see fit. Good luck.
