Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Fall of Intel

I don’t know what decisions are being made at Intel but they are bad...

• Intel delaying 7nm CPU production...
• Apple ditching Intel (basically outsourcing their outsourcing)
• Intel leaking their roadmaps while AMD hints that they’re going to be ahead of Intel until 2024. Pretty sure you all have leaked it more than once as well.
• With the leaked roadmap, Intel suggests that they’re going to be stuck with 10nm for a while whereas AMD says they will be in 5nm by the time Intel 7nm rolls out. Is 10nm++ just enhanced crystallography?
• Massive performance slow downs with current CPUs whereas AMD is dominated in costs and performance.
• No one really knows what to do with your Myriad X devices. There’s no clear market for that... thing...
• Godspeed to your Xe GPUs that was recently announced. I don’t think it’s likely to surpass anything that AMD or NVidia has but we’ll see... There’s already rumors that it’s not performing well and that release will be pushed back to 2022.
• Server companies have gathered massive interest in AMD EPYC. I guess when you gave them an NDA for your roadmap, they are likely changing their minds.

Am I missing anything? This is all external perspective. I don’t work for Intel.

Intel's x86 manufacturing delays are leading to x86 irrelevancy as many PC producers will switch to ARM more aggressively. Once Apple present super-thin ARM notebook, PC manufacturers will have to follow ARM route as well. There are rumours that Samsung is already working on Exynos for Windows with Radeon graphics. Other companies will follow that path most likely as it will also increase their margins significantly.

There is no fix for that technological challenges in Intel's management changes. It might be even issue or kind of limitation with scaling Intel's x86 architecture to smaller manufacturing nodes. It's not possible to fix these problems Intel has - It's done. Intel will never be company like it used to be.

Once Intel moves to 7nm there will be already 10-15% MSS for ARM even in PC clients and TSMC will be on 5nm scaling further... It's quite possible that Intel will never reach 7nm as they won't be able to keep fabs. Once they lose fabs they will become irrelevant x86 chip designer whose product nobody wants and that might happen in 3-5 years from now. Intel might drop to 50% MSS even in client PCs.

The manufacturing would never survive if separated from the design side

A split of the manufacturing and design parts of the company makes perfect sense. Intel will eat itself to keep the share price high.

It is always possible to recover, no company has more money and talent.

Sadly the senior leadership hasn’t the skill and both the design and process team culture and leadership are broken

Intel's only hope is to improve organizational efficiency by radical purging and restructuring of its management structure.

The fact is that decisions made over the past few years have led up to this.

Can the company be saved? or will they split it up like has been rumored internally for several quarters?
