Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Any managers/supervisors PIPed?

I’ve heard from about a dozen people in my network, different functions, CLs, YE, all in the Upstream and ALL TECHNICAL.
Have you become aware of anyone in leadership position held accountable?
Any supervisor, manager in PIP??
Are they all top performers Or do they get pushed out after they are “demoted” back to technical?

I've seen on many occasions where sups/mangers won't take advisor roles, team lead assignments because they HAVE to move up. Even a lateral move is viewed as they did something wrong and getting punished. They can't do such a move! The egos are real!! If a manger moves to a technical role, either you want to work with him/her to out perform them or you don't want to be near them as they may blow something up!

Managers get together and rate and rank everyone. First they rank themselves at the top. Then they take a few of the top performers, and rate them high also. Them they get to rating everyone else, middle to bottom.

Their managers, above them, don't question this bs. That's just the way the system has always worked.

Now these worthless managers will just keep their own jobs and fire anyone they don't like.

@4vik+: Are you insinuating Greenlee, Griffin, Darwin, and others were all invited to retire? It’s more plausible than they plateau, reached their highest level of incompetence, as the Peter Principle governs the Upstream.
They just cashed out, I know Greenlee hasn’t checked out years ago.
With an engineer as president of the exploration company, I’m sure geoscience is trilled without one of their geniuses in the C-suite

I know of many supervisory and executives who are taking early retirement. Many were encouraged to leave. You are not paying attention if you are not seeing the higher levels departing.

We have never needed technical knowledge, it’s all about perception. That’s the key to a career in here

Haven't seen any so far. Only technical folks in those I have seen. And the disconnect between management and the actual workers is very real. Doing technical work entails dumbing down stuff so your boss can understand what you're saying. Then they'll come up with dumb–s ideas on how you should approach a particular technical problem when they haven't done anything remotely like that in the past ten years.

Recent creation of group heads was an excellent example. Created more management fat.

And made department heads more distant and useless except to ask technically dumb questions that then you have to prove to them (i wont miss the blank stares!).

But it seems those are the ones that cut the former upper middle third.

I guess cutting out your innards is a goo way to live... well probably not.

Good luck dead pegasus!!

The irony is that during the global F&L forum in June, Brian Milton fielded a question about layoffs. He stated that if exxonmobil was going to do layoffs, we would be taking a top down approach similar to BP & Chevron.

I guess since they don't want to call this PIP program (minimum communication mass layoff), they can take any strategy they want. Bottom up it is. When getting rid of too many actual workers, the span of control for many supervisors won't make any sense and they will re-org those. Management layoffs / movement to workers will come in due time.

The managers end up top of the CL class. The assumption is you can simply “put” them back to technical roles if required.

That’s the problem, they have Managers who don’t know about the business unit and the field they are managing. Therefore there cannot be a fair review when they don’t know what their employees know. Many of the management needs to be treated the same way they treat their employees and that goes with horrible reviews as well. Cut the fat by removing all the layers of management.
