My source laughed when the official announcement was made, she told me to "Multiply the PR campaign reported announcement x3"

for this quarter an additional 14K employees tagged, "do not Hire" in HR Database
Can you say insolvency boys and girls?
Can you say bankruptcy ?
14K SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. I saw those news reports like "where did THOSE numbers come from?!? "
".. have been to two fortune 500 companies since I left"
Hmmm, starting to see a pattern.
3 employers over the last few years? Maybe you are the problem.
We are in this predicament because we are not free. soon... we will be.
Expect more like 40-50k
“but yet they keep hiring new people”.
Huh? Who is hiring? Everyone in att is 50 and older
As more of the hull submerges and floods, the less room there is for living bodies. AT&T isn't a leader in anything (other than layoffs and poor decisions) , heck, not even a runner-up. Just another over valued competitor with nothing fresh and relevant to offer.
The 4.7K number was just a small sliver - retail and some craft. I would not call that the "PR number" because it was more of a "leak" of the first trickles of the layoffs, not an announcement that AT&T did.
My guess is that they are doing this deliberately to hit the news cycles with a relatively small group of numbers. They will get a lot of press, and the lazy press will then move onto other things. By the time T starts whacking tens of thousands in the next few weeks, the news outlets will already consider T layoffs "old news." They've done this in the past, by the way.
So the OP is correct that it's just the beginning, but I think we'll see that it goes much deeper than just 3x that first number. Likely between 8-12 times.
I think ~15K is right, for this round, they'll be more, and we will have cut ~40% of current workforce by EOY, a lean mean company around ~120K.
for years they have been saying they want to be around 100,000 - 150,000 employees. but yet they keep hiring new people so they don't know which way is up. either do it or be quiet this is no way to run a company with constant threats. so glad I left the cesspool they use layoffs as a management scare tactic and don't know which way is up. i feel for the folks that are still there but just remember I have been to two fortune 500 companies since I left and they are complete opposite and pleasant places to work. so companies do not run like att. att is special.
I think that is low
