There are two directives. First is the overall reduction in headcount of 40% and then there is the increase in span of control for all people managers. If all you did was cut 40% of people and 40% of managers, the span of control would remain the same. Therefore orgs with poor span of control will get hit harder as they remove more middle managers. We all see Directors or AVPs with just a handful of direct reports. That is all going to end. Span goals are 10-12 for knowledge workers depending on the type of work. Ops and sales teams have historically been higher than that.

They just move people around to get to the required span of control. Who’s kidding who here?
Mobility AM's have largely been around 15-20 direct reports for a while now.
How is at&t not going by seniority On layoffs and just telling people it’s either severance or work from home?
Is it not a lay-off because the reps are being offered work from home?
Operations. If you’re an AM with less than 15 direct reports you better be looking over your shoulder.
We have 8 call center per first level manager.
Correct... and that is what is about to change. Higher rate of manager cuts equals greater span of control.
This makes sense....but a lot of internal teams have less than 10 DRs per manager.
