Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

More Topics Deleted

It seems that yet another constructive discussion on racism has been purged from this site. Nothing in these threads appears to violate the rules regarding content on this website, so it's unclear why they keep getting deleted.

I feel strongly that, especially given the events of the past few weeks, it is incredibility important that we continue to examine and have a open and honest dialogue about these relevant issues. The anonymous nature of this website is makes it an ideal place to hold such a dialog.

On it's social media, Mattel has committed to fighting systemic racism and says each of it's brands has an important role to play in that fight. We can not turn a blind eye to these issues and keep deleting attempts by Mattel employees to address them!

Disappointing.

Nobody cares about the color of the skin of executives except the woke minority that constantly yell into megaphones about the injustice in the world. Companies like Mattel cave into this nonsense and comply. I feel sorry for anybody that Mattel hires, it’s like getting a job on the Titanic.

I couldn't care less whether an executive or board member is a man or woman or what color skin they have as long as they do a good job. Mattel needs strong leaders, period. Everything else is a distraction.

Mattel announced on LinkedIn it would Play Fair and “build a workforce that reflects the diversity of our community, focusing on the development and recruitment of Black talent.”

Great. In addition to creating a diverse pool as planned, creating an inclusive culture upon arrival is key. Because right now it is not at all that. Senior mgt needs a lot of training. I have seen a sole ethnic colleague enter in only to leave rather quickly as there was no social inclusion whether because of cliques or whatever. The whatever requires training.

Unfortunately none of our executives or board members have done a good job.

You don’t magically get women and black people on the Board or in executive roles. You have to make an effort to seek out these candidates. Mattel says this is so important to them, but it’s all talk. Nothing will change and it doesn’t matter, Mattel is a sinking ship.

I agree with you that between two equally likeable job applicants, the fact that one of them was the first member of their family to go to college might demonstrate a certain determination and grit that might make them stand out over a candidate who was legacy student who you might assume had an easier time getting through school, but even if that assumption was true, I still don't see what it has to do with a person's skin color.

Your basically saying if you like two candidates equally, Mattel should use race as the tie breaker and pick the person we hire based on their skin color?

You didn't answer my question, there is no such thing as two identical job applicants whose only difference is race.

How important do you think the color of a job applicant's skin should be when deciding who gets the job?

If 2 candidates had equal work experience, great personalities, the same education but one was black and one was white, who do you think the old white guys would hire? Not because they are racist, people tend to choose people who are most like them. Also, there are many blacks and latinos that are the first in their family to go to college. How many connections do you think they have compared to a white kid whose parents are rich?

How important do you think the color of a job applicant's skin should be when deciding who gets the job?

Is it more important than their work experience? Is it more important than their personality? Is it more important than their skills? Their education? How well they conduct themselves in a job interview?

Where would you rank it in terms of importance next to these other qualifications?

If you want diverse candidates you have to search for them. Look at Joe Biden, he is searching for a woman of color for VP. Many white males are willing and capable to do the job but he is making an effort to change. Mattel should do the same for VP and other executive roles at the company or nothing will ever change.

Instead listening to all these presumably white people on this website talk about their views on how anti-racism and diversity initiatives are so terrible, how about we listen to someone who can speak about the subject through the lived experience of being an African American.

I found this video very powerful and made me question many of my own preconceived notions about racism.

Also the video is only 13 mins long and doesn't take 2 hours to get to the point!

Explain to me exactly how the pool of potential hires has zero diversity? When Mattel has an opening, they typically post it on their website. Is the internet not a diverse enough place to look? Maybe you're taking only executive, in which case I'm sure the hiring process is more selective and involved. If you're suggesting Mattel intensionally only selects a pool white candidates from which to hire, well that's a pretty bold claim. Do you work in HR hiring execs?

When there’s no/zero diversity in the pool - but you say you don’t discriminate- check yourself. That’s the point.

I think you're missing my point. Mattel can not hire a black person over a white person simply because they want more black employees anymore than they can hire a white person because over a black one because they want more white employees. Either case would be morally wrong and discriminatory, and like I said, very much illegal.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination in hiring based on race, color, religion, s-x, or national origin. Get a grip.

Last poster missing the point - take your wall down fir a minute. You have to diversify the candidate pool to create a reasonably fair playing field. Additionally, if your workforce doesn’t remotely reflect your customer base/ is that good business? The message is - check the process.

It's actually against the law to hire someone based on their race.

Mattel needs to change their hiring practices. It’s impossible not to find any people of color suitable for Director and above positions. Hourly and seasonal do not cut it. No one of color in a given office is a complete D & I failure.
Go to colleges, mentor, partner with diverse artists. And don’t make statements on social media that you cannot back up. Who is advising you?

Someone had shared a link to a very good and thoughtful podcast discussing recent social protests and civil unrest. I'm not sure why but it seems as though someone deleted the link so here it is again for anyone who wants to take a listen.

@1rax+15rs8EYY To be fair, Ynot is Israeli, it's hard to think of a single group of people who've endured more oppression and brutality at the hands of the State during the past 100 year or so than the Jews. I think they know a thing or two about institutionalized systemic racism.

I implore everyone to listen to Sam Harris' most recent podcast, entitled "Can We Pull Back From The Brink?" from June 12, 2020, in which he speaks about the recent social protests and civil unrest, in light of what we know about racism and police violence in America.

Please listen and share, this is the kind of levelheaded, reasoned conversations we, as a nation, need to be engaging in right now. I don't care if you're who you are, left, right, center black, white, or whatever, this is a must listen for all Americans.

You can find it here at his website, on YouTube, or where ever you get your podcasts:

The clap back Mattel is receiving on LinkedIn related to their equality post demonstrates how fast people will come at you when they think you’re not being straight with them. Put forth high-paid executives of different races and let them drive through this discussion. Not Richard. Not Ynon, etc.
