Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

It is really so simple

SLB must apply a management style that respects the culture of the area in which they operate. Send a French 30 year old to the US who only has management experience in Africa to manage 20+ year US employees? Or visa versa. Who in their right mind believes this is a plan that builds instant respect among employees? Employees leave bad bosses first, not companies. That is a geographic fact!

Good luck- that is all you need, favoritism does exist but if lucky, above B rated and a bosses favorite you will be okay.

I know I was A rated for nearly 20 years and as a result various bosses favorite, top person changed no longer their favorite employee and my luck ran out- I believe I am still good but no longer favorite hence no longer slb employee.

Agree!!
For secure French, cut US, Japanese and other.
They closed R&D in Japan and transferred under new developing project to France to secure French people by cutting many Japanese, too.
I was experienced young French manager who doesn't know any technical and also not enough skill as at the function and as manager so I was quite hard time to spend many times for him to explain from zero to 100 again and again to make understand him...he was also not skilled negotiation and other...only FRENCH!!

Management is incompetent in Houston. And the worst part is that HR has been notified of their lack of technical and soft skills, but they just don’t do anything.

I would add to this the demoralizing and unfair practice of choosing managers based on their nationality rather thsn their abilities or experience. As an example there are a preponderance of French managers in Sugar Land but few if any American managers in Clamart and Paris. Since the official company language is English spoken at work the fact that an American does not speak French should not matter.

You nailed it, and the reason is very simple. Sometimes people advance their careers by exhibiting social skills only vs truly combining them with the technical ones that the company needs. I know a guy, now in UK as an expat Champion with her braggy wife who has s & u $ c & k so much that is perceived as a SME. Ask him about them outside world and he will give a lunatic look, the guy is so clueless and indoctrinated that the youngsters are no longer listing to him.

Hey, he may be friends with Frenchie!!! Nail them both.

Totally agree. It doesn’t matter how good you are, a bad manager can ruin your career. They are toxic and should be identified and removed from a organization to be successful in the future
