Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Things are about to get worse

In addition to layoffs, they are also looking to transfer many jobs to Manila, Chennai and Krakow this year. Now that they've had a test run of 3 months, they know which jobs can be transferred.

Willing to bet that by year end, between job redundancies and transfer of job to the SBOs, there will be a 30%-40% headcount reduction at the Woodcreek campus.

Probably more precise to say the rest of the “developed” world ... but keep pretending that shooting people as they run away, or kneeling on someone’s neck for 9 minutes are OK because they didn’t happen to you or your kin. Everything is perfect in your America.

Its interesting how everybody pro trump, corporate america in that shell office. But now that they get the same respect and protection they blame dutch people. Go fix your country with racial problem worst than majority of the world and no laboir protection for employees. We are in the same condition in Canada but dont blame dutch for that.

How can other companies like XOM manage to get through the downturn and slashing opex without laying off their employees. In their townhall, the CEO got a standing ovation for saying employee layoff is not in consideration with the current opex reduction.
While in Shell, it’s constant layoffs.
It blows my mind.

The time has come for BVB to step down and let someone more in tune with current and future aspirations for a company that’s in transition. You need a person with a vision for the future, but still an understanding of the present beyond a slash and burn mentality. Using a scorched earth policy on your core technology base never works for energy companies. ExxonMobile has their eye on the ball and will come through this stronger then the other majors.

Don't wait, leave ahead of others, there are operators that are hiring now, join a growing company. You probably think I must be kidding, no one could be hiring, definitely not growing, not in oil & gas. When was the last time you checked out the job sites?

Some people here discuss the need for employees with experienced and specialized skills, but they're not needed anymore. Offshoring is the future. Map everybody overseas. The company is more concerned about productivity per dollar than knowledgable, vetted, correct results. Business decision boards assure that no single person is accountable for wrong decisions. IPFs reflect how many spreadsheets and powerpoints you churn out (and political allies you have within the organization). Quality and knowledge aren't valued, so why not get 3 less-capable people to churn out more spreadsheets, power points, and 100% correct decision board results for 50% of your salary? It makes good financial sense. The practice is beautiful, and will result in the greatest recovery in history!

They have been using the same old tactics over and over again, like positions being mapped/not mapped, forced MORs...whatever...Play us like a fool. Honestly, it’s not worth the effort to take their words seriously, because it’s just a job not a career.

And why did you apply for svs?!! It makes no sense, let them fire you, you will have a better case!

So sick of the perpetual state of precarity that Shell imposes on us that I went ahead and applied for voluntary SVS. I discussed this with my manager early on. I then applied for it on the last day. My manager told me on thew following Tuesday that my position is not likely going away, so it is unlikely that my SVS is accepted.

What?

If the position is mapped, why did they let me apply for SVS? I likely won't get SVS AND I just screwed my career (despite what they say).

The cuts will be enormous in Wood Creek. Got my first look at positions posted in UPU OR, there are 2 openings in my discipline and currently 30-40 people working in those roles. I have no idea how many of those people will be mapped, but it still doesn’t seem good to me.

I say 5-10% in H-town. It's already lean compared to NL. The NL bloodsuckers love US money!

I'd say 60% reduction in H-town. There won't be much left to manage and our micromanagers will have to go back to their windmills and tulips. Kind of sad considering how this is oil from our country yet we are treated like second class citizens. Once shell rides off into the sunset, we should show mote discretion as to which corporations we lease minerals to.. we arent a banana republic...

Organizations with no P&L accountability (Finance, HR, P&T, C&P) can easily be offshored with significant reductions in redundancies. They’ve already done this albeit half a–. I expect them to complete the job. If you aren’t directly tied to bringing in revenue to the P&L, expect to have your role eliminated.

The problem at Shell is they move the jobs overseas, but not the brain power. They cuts heads, but not process.

I guess it all depends on job specifics. May still be hard to transfer mission critical functions easily such as geology or specialized engineering. It's not like all those other places are full of well trained folks.

A lot of what could be outsourced was outsourced during the previous downturn.

The juicy fat target is Europe. Earlier in lock down their VPN had 15k users, while the US had 6k. Let these numbers sink in - 15k is a lot of people for a geographical area that is not making money.

Too many unnecessary and costly employees.
Shell is going to save money having their own training program for those out of high school.
Cut the middleman out....
