Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

RIF but no RIR (reduction in reserves)

Something I always found interesting/borderline fraudulent at Marathon - tiny / no changes in reserves of oil in ground, ever. You lay off 20% (2015) & 16% (2020) of your employees b/c lower for longer, but no changes needed in the reserve base? (which your credit rating is based on) hmm.....

But don't worry we're building a brand new building to attract new talent & save on rent, hmm...

And permian & oklahoma performance is amazing, it's just that the other two assets are cash flow positive....

And we have tons of cash & credit, but will immediately stop exploration b/c we manage for 3-6 months in the future...

The entire business is modeled around returning dividends to stakeholders. Doing such makes the executive leadership team look really awesome. This may not be new news to you, but no one gives an F about you as an employee.

Don't forget Lee and the clowns wiped out 17% of the staff in 2019 as well in order to "return positive cash flows to our stockholders".

The reserves have been “aggressive” (some might say “questionable” or “inaccurate “) since 2011 or 2012. As the bright and shining stars came into the company at the beginning of the Eagle Ford, they realized that Marathon’s traditional, conservative reserve reporting methods made them look not so shiny. And so they agitated to revise those methods and boost our numbers to compete with our brand spanking new peer group (a/k/a the penny stock jobbers). No longer capable of competing with peers with real underlying reserves (XOM, COP, CVR) we turned to a new peer group and our relative performance was much more impressive. But on a fundamental level our journey to top quartile was mostly a result of moving from the olympics to the special olympics.
