Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Now 41 Kmarts

They're starting to fall like Dominos. With Minot ND closing, there are now 41, non-closing Kmarts, of which 30 are in the US. And no, I do not and will not, include Brooklyn NY, because it's a Sears not a Kmart. If y'all have any verifiable additional closings, then please link them up, so I can remove those stores from my list upon verification:

The Kmarts are easier to keep track of because they didn't (to my knowledge) close and then selectively reopen because of Covid-19. I agree that there are no more than 41 non-liquidating Kmarts.

Sears are harder to keep track of because the company often takes them out of the Store Locator when they temporarily close, then adds them back when they reopen. There are definitely no more than 81 non-liquidating Sears, but there may be fewer.

It is very hard to keep track of what Sears stores are temporarily closed, permanently closed, liquidating, reopening, etc. right now.

All I know for sure is that before Covid-19, there were 89 non-closing Sears stores (including the 6 in Puerto Rico), and that since then, 8 of them have been posted as "closing" on the jobs.sears.com board. That puts my count at 81, but I've seen lower estimates from other people.

I haven't deleted you from any website, and certainly not from TheLayoff.com . I have no idea why your earlier post of this list disappeared.

@1yji+15c1Me2F Hi Ron. Still not sure why you deleted me from another website for being conservative (I have friends of all persuasions). Regardless, I was not aware that there was a Target nearby. That is ALWAYS the Deathnail of any Kmart (a Targy or Wally within a couple of miles radius). They simply cannot compete. They don't thrive, but CAN "survive" in areas where the other 2 brands are NOT nearby. From what you stated, with Targy-wargy across the street, that Kmart's Death warrant has already been signed. I used to live in North Bergen NJ, very big Kmart was there......always busy. Target opened and they were gone within Months.
Anyway, here's is the "anonymous map guy's" link. His Kmart map matches mine, as it always does. Wanted to run his Sears map by ya. He has 77. Is that right? Someone in another thread claimed 68, to which you did not refute it. Anyway, here he (anonymous map guy) is:

A Target opened late last year in the Cape Cod Mall, across the street from the Hyannis Kmart. The Target occupies the site of a Sears store that closed in 2018. It is not a full-sized Target, but may still be enough to cut into Kmart's sales. It is the only Target on Cape Cod.

The landlord of the Hyannis Kmart would like to redevelop the property:

In normal times, one might expect the developer to buy out Kmart's remaining lease to make them go away (as has happened in Somerville MA, NYC Penn Plaza, Minneapolis, and perhaps other places). But real estate developers and landlords are hurting right now too.

You can be certain that Hamilton MT, and Marshall MI are going to close. They are not remotely close to any other locations. I would Wager Hyannis MA as well (the last New England Kmart). Hyannis is a very nice area, but let's face it......it's pretty much a Summer resort on Cape Cod. When there were many Kmarts in the region, they could "carry" a Seasonal store Year round, because there were always trucks in the area anyway. They will not continue transporting goods to a store in Hyannis that is basically only Profitable from about May-September, when there are no other stores within about 3 states of there.

Alright! Yes! 1 of the outlets I contacted was Minot Daily News and they promptly honored my request for a story on the closure. According to the article, they are closing July 17. Cool!

So I contacted various media outlets in Minot and Lebanon, and shared with them, the closing link. I did this, because, in case Eddie/Larry pull the closing links from the job listing website, at least there will be legitimate other links, to the closings. So far Valley News has obliged my request for a news story on the subject. Their editor emailed me, thanking me for the news Tip. You're welcome:
