Thread regarding IBM layoffs

This makes no sense

From where I sit, I see no coherent strategy at all. Due to the loss of skilled teams in this last RA move, we are paying over 37 million in penalties to drop 42 signed contracts (over 190 million in rev) that we no longer have the personnel to support. Thats a total loss of over 220 million to IBM. They could have paid the salaries of everyone let go all years for that with a tidy profit left over. Would that not have made more sense that to flush that amount down the drain? They could have always RA'ed the same people AFTER the contracts were fulfilled.

@1emr They don't need to "fill the hole". Guidance is top 1000 bring to Red Hat. Everything else is just free cash flow and use as need.

During my interview last Thursday I was told my job is moving offshore. An Indian systems guy was added to the team I am on so I'm assuming he's taking over my role. Especially since I was told to show him some of my work which now I know why.

Sooo... I did a bit of searching and discovered that on average Indian programmers earn about 15,000 rupees a month. That is equal to about $200 US dollars. A month. My monthly salary is roughly 30 times that.

@1hpy interesting. Not sure how they think OS licenses and OpenShift are going to fill the hole of any GTS contract.

The strategy is anticipated future Red Hat revenue contracts. RH contract is revenue amortization and worth much more than face due to supporting agendas and quarterly guidance. Other contracts will be lost due to this prioritization.

Job cuts sound desperate and spell l a c k of innovation.

Wasn't AK promoted to CEO for enthusiastically promising a technological revolution in cloud and ai?

Where is the long pipeline of products that he dreamed up for this moment?

freeloaders? after paying thousands of dollars in tuition fees (much more than any citizen or state resident) to get a degree and compete with everyone to get a job? No surprise American universities are failing and furloughing employees without that sweet international student cash flowing in right now. And yeah don't forget all the taxes including social security (which they don't back coz they ain't citizens) that they paying. SMH

Your position will be offshore to Bosnia or other EMEA, just document what you do and write the cookbook, and hand hold a trainee. Then they can show you the door...no problem

Given the voting, perhaps you should take your nationalist spew elsewhere, people have the decency not to go along with your trolling. As much as you claim to be an American - what you are spouting are not American values.

Salaries for H1B are not lower. Check the DOL stats. H1Bs with my same job title are getting paid 50-100K more than I am as a citizen. I don’t understand the appeal of H1B, seems like a lot of headache employers need to go through. But I think in a permanent WFH future like IBM, FAANG, and other countries have set up, there is no point in having H1Bs anymore. From a pure business perspective I cannot see how any reputable employer could keep H1B. Unless there is something I’m missing, from a cost/benefit perspective there is none.

You did not answer if you actually work/worked for IBM. So I will ignore your comments going forward.

g5e - please take your issues with H-1B workers elsewhere. IF you are a person (not a bot) and IF you work or worked with IBM (not a troll) and have been RA'd. I am sorry for what happened to you but you are not exactly helping your cause by your comments here.

Good point. The contract on my account is ironclad and managed by a dedicated team of vendor managers. Every miss is penalized.
