Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

Ex-employees return as contractors

Is it legal to release employees and turn around and make them an offer to come back as a contractor (less pay and no benefits)? Asking for a friend. This may or may not be happening in OneStim (hypothetically ;))

Very legal and smart to do from a short term financial aspect. However if slb wants back in the game they have to stop screwing there their coworkers. The only ones willing to come back under worse conditions would be the personnel who couldn’t or wouldn’t get a job somewhere else. Slb is f—ed.?

Slow your roll Mgr, there's no righteousness or anger over here. Just posing a question. But I hope your condescending reply gave you whatever sense of satisfaction and self-importance is lacking in your life. Perhaps questioning the "legality" wasn't the right approach as compared to the ethics of it. Anyone who's not G13 or higher needs to reevaluate their viability in a company that has proven once again that Field employees are worthless sheep to be slaughtered for the protection of executive bonuses.

Is it legal? Uh yea it's legal. Making a job offer isnt against the law. The former employee has the right to refuse it. And fyi, staffing agencies offer benefits. Just because the contractor isn't eligible for SLB benefits doesnt mean they arent eligible for any benefits.
Smh kids these days.....your winky face makes me think you feel like you discovered some great injustice when really this is common in every industry and your righteous anger is misguided and foolish.

Yes, it's legal to do so and unfortunately makes sense for the company. I'd wager SLB pays more for benefits than it does for employee salary. Think about it this way, as a contractor your friend won't have as much red tape to deal with job depending. For some jobs, you may in fact get paid better as equipment maintenance gets paid decently once you're up to Mt3/ET3. Private sector pay is usually 10-15 dollars an hour higher.
