Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Told Separation Notice Was A Mistake

On June 25 I received the message about layoffs. Got a call from my (then) leader saying I wasn't laid off and would be brought back on the week of 7/5. A few hours later, I receive an email stating I receive to emails: separation and severance. That same week, I had applied on line and gone to a scheduled interview for a different Macys. When I arrived for the interview, they had no clue. I had to show them email but the OM wasn't there anyway. My mindset at that time was, "Well, not surprising, it IS Macy's after all!"
However, the call that I was being rehired, THEN the email of separation from our "great" CEO Jeff G tripped my fed up nerves and it was a relief. I didn't bother calling my leader the next day because I was just glad to have not only one sign (the screwed up interview), but 2 more that Macy's is really really incompetent. THEN, I get a call on July 1st from my new leader telling me the day's I'm scheduled to come back! I told him about the Separation Notice and Severance letter and he said that they had gone out to many people that were actually hired back.
Has this happened to anyone?
I have no received nothing in writing about being rehired. The notices still remain in my messages in Insite. I'm due to be back July 9th, however, the last day to receive the severance letter is July 14th, I believe.
I've been collecting unemployment and while I'd be happy to have a job, I don't want to go back for a week only to receive notice that I have been let go. I'd imagine it would be a freaking nightmare to straighten out.
Not to mention, my hours were cut to 12 hours per week and the drive to and from would have me bringing home about 100 bucks when all is said and done. Unemployment is far and away been paying my bills and I've been hanging on to most of it in case of the next lockdown.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I feel like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.
Thanks everyone.

Not only I got the email they also call me to let me know my position is no longer available and they are not hiring for couple of months . I was little upset because she mention my benefits will be cut out in two days without giving me time to look for health insurance . I figured it’s time to move on and I start applying for covered America. I was completing okay and already accepted that I don’t have job anymore and will look for new one . Now after one week , they call me and told me they make a mistake and just disregard the email . Really ?? Just like that ! Telling me for right now you are still forlough and just wait for the schedule. What about my benefits? Well , that’s a good question ..let me work on it and give you a call in a couple of days !!!

I would walk. I was in the store and there is no one working which means you will be worked to death only to be let go at a later date. Save you’re health. Macy’s isn’t worth your health

Hours cut and net $100 Are you seriously asking us what you should do. You’d still make more off unemployment even without the extra cares act money. Smh.

Interview situation. AST an AST, if we don’t know jobs are posted, we don’t know to look for scheduled interviews. And they have been making us work as sales colleagues so we aren’t in the office to answer phones and all the other things everyone seems as “do nothing” AST tasks.

At our DFW store there were numerous colleagues and 1 mgr who got the same mixed signal..,store mgr saying one thing and an email stating the opposite. Truly, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Ask your manager to send you an email saying the layoff email was a mistake and that you are to start again on July xx, 2020 & cc: HR. Get something in writing. In the meantime, keep looking for a new job.

OP here. Thanks for all your responses. So glad I stumbled onto this site. I feel like a fog has lifted and so much better. Good luck to everyone. I was lucky I didn't invest many years into the company, and really feel for those who did.

I feel for you my friend... Same thing happened to me and my colleagues here in the Southwest. A bunch of us get called back into work. All wondering if we are going to stay with the announcements from D-Day soon approaching. After being told we were safe, we received a separation e-mail. Our people leader had no clue. Our VPSM had no clue either. We all went from a low of being on furlough to a high of being called back to a low of not being sure if we were going to be retained to high of yes you are safe to an all time low of getting a lay off e-mail. Our VPSM said im sorry it was all a mistake and we need you here, be we all decided that this is how the big M communicates, which is totally dysfunctional. All 4 of us decided to leave. I've had to take a double dose of my blood pressure medicine for the past week. I wish you well.

Announced today more job losses Bloomingdale’s next will be Macy’s associates. (Macy’s)We are a union store with an active union. 1st round you can say no and Look no one wants to go back during this pandemic. They are desperate.
This store was dirty and ravaged by shoplifter/d–g addicts before the pandemic. I have no plan to go back even if they don’t lay me off.

I’ll tell you why. Because corporate doesn’t Communicate with the stores and the stores have no clue what they are doing.

Just questioning how if M sends a termination email, do they have the right to call someone? Seems nuts!

I may not know the rules, but what if in this case a person gets the email their employment is terminated. Moved on and never spoke to anyone again at M? With an email saying termination, not to mention the chaos, how can they even insist you go back?

What a sh– show !!
Sorry you are being turned upside down
If I was given the option ( not knowing how long have you been with company )
I would take the severance and unemployment and take your talent elsewhere.
I’m embarrassed I gave them so much of my life , time and heart

Not surprised no one knew you were arriving for an interview. Company cut loose a lot of ASTS who were in charge of fielding the interview schedule and ensuring the stores were ready for interviews each day.
