Put 4 kids through college on a single Ford salary, I am very thankful.
I retired a while ago.
It breaks my heart to see what they are doing to the worker nowadays. We did not have it easy but at least there was dignity and we were able to make ends meet.

I was an LL6 SRD'd last year with over 48 years of very loyal service and great reviews. I told my boss at the beginning of 2019 I was going to retire at the end of 2019. In May of last year I was told my job was going away (which it never did) so my services were no longer needed. So I took my 9 months severance, very very generous pension, Social Security/Medicare and retired. Oh...by the way since I no longer have work expenses and pay anywhere near the taxes I was paying my "take home" pay is more than when I was working with far less stress and much better Medical.....for me it could not have been better other than being told I was pretty useless to them after 48 years service.....so much for putting employees first.

I encouraged my children to look at industries other than automotive.
Both my children are making more $ and benefits than I am.
They are both software engineers graduated from college 3 and 5 years ago.
I have 35 years software engineering at Ford.
They are working in Texas and Georgia. The cost of living is similar to MI.
I am happy my children are doing well.
At Ford after the first years everyone gets 2-3% yearly bump, so you soon find yourself
being paid below industry standard. The pension is what kept many here, but now Ford
boots people right before they hit pension milestones.
As of 2017, they force anyone out who is even close to retirement. If you didn't take the PRP in 2018, you were SRD'd. Don't encourage your kids to have a "career" at Ford. It doesn't exist anymore.
It’s great that you could retire when you wanted to. Unfortunately my hubby didn’t have that luxury. He was SRD’ed in May of 19. He was a loyal employee with great reviews! He is a “retiree”, luckily qualifying for retirement. Would of been nice fir him to be able to work 7 more years & retiree on his own terms.

@lco+15BrUvyy Or here me out. . . you could not entitle your children to free college and allow them to take out some portion of government loans or tell them you will pay for a higher amount if they go to community college for the first two years.
Also unless you are doing 8 years for med school or going to Harvard a lot of good and mid tier colleges aren't $250,000 for 4 years. after a quick search SVSU and GVSU are around $25k for the year thus $100-120k for 4 years without scholarships, or UofM which is around $25-30k a year so still $120k($130k less than where ever you're sending your kid). In addition, if you sent them to community college for the first 2 years you could easily cut out $30k ($10k per year room and board + tuition half off for 2 years). The fact that people will pay an extra $150k+ for little Johnny to go to some posh school out of state blows my mind.
