Thread regarding Noble Energy Inc. layoffs

Is the Furlough something I should be considering as a low chance of returning to work by December?

I am considering just giving up on oil and before I start the process of giving up and selling everything to move back with parents I wanted someone to tell me it’s the best choice right now, or I should wait until sept to do this knowing the housing markets and job markets will likely be worse.

I’m feeling really worried this is a very long prelude to layoff with noble and I am not seeing any O&G jobs anywhere so I want to do what is best for my family

They might as well cut the severance packages now, no tenured employee is leaving money on the table

Bounce or volunteer for lay-off with package if you can Holmes. This company is sinking. Can you tell by the lack of direction? BOD is gonna revamp in Q12021 and it’s gonna be different.

Time to move on, this industry hasn’t been good for a very long time. If you’re young then it’s best to find a new career path.

I agree with most all of the previous posts, especially about adding to skill set. Data science is great and the skills transfer. Rice has a part time MCAM program. If numbers are not your strong suit, you can pick up an easy masters in HR. Lots of decent online programs and some from big name (Georgetown, Cornell, etc.) schools. One of the girls in HR did this a couple years ago.

Depends where you’re at and what you do. TX won’t rebound for 1-2 years. CO will pick up a bit by 2H 2020, but on a pretty limited basis.

I was never even furloughed, but I’m making plans for a career change

If you’re young (under 40). I’d find a new career in a different industry. You will be better off in the long run. Noble is going nowhere but down the drain ... the industry is in shambles. Historically it’s an industry that will layoff you off and not think twice about it. Time to move on!

I’m sorry you have to go through these decisions, it’s an ugly part of the industry.
Historically the market and jobs come back, but these are not typical times so no one really knows. Is there any trusted mgr left you can have a heart to heart with? He may not be able to officially tell you the plans for your role, but may give you unofficial guidance.
If you do move, you can always move back if a job offer comes. Keep your networks and professional contacts active. If I were early career, I would add data science or renewables to my skill set.

It’s hard to say. There will always be layoffs in oil & gas. If you haven’t been laid off yet, it seems like someone wants to keep you around but they don’t know if they’ll be able to. It really depends on if you can live with the uncertainty. If you are young and worry you won’t be able to support your family you should at least explore other industries. If you’re old like me with no transferable skills, just stick it out & see what happens!
