If you are not "buddy" or "spouse", you are out. Not skills that matter but the connection

MWP's. You have to watch out for the MWP's. mo–ns With Power. They are everywhere. Have witness people making $30K + mistakes on production units in mfg. Next thing you know, well they passed their SETC and will be promoted. HUH? SLB is a procedural driven company. If you do this, this and this, you get this. I know I am not alone on this but when you got your SLP-3 objectives and were PIP eligible, which objectives did you work first? It's all scorecard related. Who cares about the quality of work, I did the objective.

this is very common whereever I worked. honestly I did not know it was against any policy, because it sure doesn't seem so. This does not mean the manager will be biased towards that employee, but he/she usually is.

Exactly - I have seen things happen that shouldn’t. Like folks on a do not rehire list get rehired what a joke!!

That is why Champions exist, to perpetuate this system and collectively continue to milk SLB all over the world. Oh, and to keep their wives' happy bragging alive.

If nepotism is a corporate value they should just go ahead and list it. At least you know what you are facing. But filling the air with inclusive and progressive jargon during meetings and town halls just underlines how unethical this company has become.

My manager hangs out with his report after work. Isn't it against the policy?

Relationships certainly help, but they aren't everything.
