Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

VSPP Confirmations Yet?

I put in for the VSPP that closed on 3/15/2020 and I am hearing that some are hearing that they have received word that they are getting the package. Has anyone that put in for the package received confirmation that they got it either officially or unofficially? I am so ready to move on from here and the sooner the better. The email confirmation for the VSPP stated I would here from my boss on June 12 if I got it. It seemed generic but not much about CenturyLink is personal anymore except the escort to the door.

"I was fortunate enough to receive a package offer this morning and the number of people that were denied is much greater than the number that received an offer. Part of the packet includes a list of titles with the age and quantity of people that received and denied a RIF package. There is about a 1.5 pages list of those that received an offer and a 10 page list of those that were denied. The ages that received an offer were 24 to 74 years old. The ages that were denied is roughly the same. I truly feel for those that requested an offer and did not receive one. This is just another example to add to the long list of CTL let downs. Best of luck to all."

Would be curious to see who was accepted and if the difference between them was hire date, pre 2000 and post 2000, thats the cut off point for pension and other benefits at least for Legacy Qwest people.

This is true. They are not stopping anyone no matter age or service. They don't want anyone who doesn't want to be here.

The dates are staggered by groups. Everyone who volunteered in one group was notified on May 29 and last day was June 5. Second group notified on June 5 and last day is June 12. If your SOI email confirmation says you will hear on 12th - you will be notified on 12th and last day will be 19th. Guidance to mgmt is if any one volunteers they should be allowed to take the package and leave. For some other groups lay-off is in July....

What I think is funny and they don't see it coming is, all the young guys with exception of one or two in our area, are looking for jobs outside the company. Ones that weren't, are now since the latest offer, because they don't want to be left behind to deal with the mess and be on call all the time. A couple have already left and a couple more have interviews this week.
So, they cut headcount, then a bunch just quit. May be their end game but it should make it real interesting for the couple who are left.

"Pretty sure in our area they can move you anywhere within 50 miles of your reporting center. Its done all the time...sometimes for a day...sometimes for a week or more."

True but you report to your PRP and then go there or they have to compensate you. They don't want to but they are suppose to.

We were told it's held up in HR. They are trying to figure out if they can let us all go or not and who they are going to move to different reporting areas.

They can't force you out of your RCA without compensation and your given a choice as well if it is a undo hardship. They have to pay relocation and all that good stuff which I highly doubt they would want to do.

It's a waiting game. In our area, some of the guys have already been talked to about coming back as contractors. That was not well received. Others who did not put in for the package, now wish they would have, because the reality of them not being able to do all the work has set in, and now they have a case of the a–. Moving the remaining few among reporting areas to cover things is being discussed and that is something the remaining few didn't see coming. And they're not happy. It just gets better and better. It's worth the wait to get out of here.

"This board seems to be mostly union workers but I am white collar worker and said yes to the show of interest survey. I heard last week i was approved for the v s p. Last day is June 12. There were 10 total in our org, spread out into ~1 per sub team. A friend works in a different white collar org in CTL and they lost 10 contractors, 0 fte. I’ve heard renegotiating contracts (cost cutting) was another measure taken. So if they make the numbers they may not need to lay-off union as much or at all. I’ve been at this company for too long already and they don’t care about the people and the move towards low paid overworked just never ends. The boss will probably retire early after sending jobs offshore. I’ve worked at good companies and this isn’t one of them. Hasn’t been for a long time."

If I remember the new wages for the Legacy Qwest Contract kicks in June 11th if I remember correctly, been like since October they negotiated it and seems to sink up with them trying to hustle people out the door.

The only people that should stay are those near retirement and those who are incompetent and can not do anything else.
Not a real Union job.

Hypocrites and whiny babies. Sounds like we have a Kool-aid drunker reading thru the post. CenturyLink as well as all of the Telco industry as a whole has changed dramatically over my 20 years. The way we do business is no where near the most effective way to get service delivered in a timely manner. The recipe of the merger of companies and not processes as well as down sizing of company employees has hurt us throughout the years. The answer to making a company profitable does not include creating a shell of a company that outsources all of its processes to the lowest bidder.

Yes. Don't forget the no penalty on my retirement and the full bucket toward medical. When they hand you the cardboard box, you will leave with much less.

The employee survey makes it pretty clear nobody wants to be here. The Only ones who want to be here are the guys that have never made the money anywhere else they make here, and know they will never make it anywhere else. Those are the ones shivering and just praying they keep their jobs, until they can't avoid getting fired because of the rigged poor performer plan. Oh, and those who refuse to take off the rose colored glasses, because they hang on and believe every word their lying boss says, when he lies to them and tells them everything will be ok. They lie to themselves too, even though they see what's happening, but refuse to believe it.

Really wish they would realize not many people that have been here for 10, 20 or even 30 years wants to be here any longer, and just approve all of us that put in for this offer and let us get moving on and get it done, seems it is their issue to deal with since they made all the bad decisions that lead up to this.

If you don’t seem to get an answer in a timely manner than go over your boss’s head to their boss to heck with what’s proper at this point.

Agree. I sure wouldn't want to be one of the couple techs left behind to try and do all the work and babysit the contractors.

In my opinion if they got more then they wanted they have to look at work balance in areas and see if they have the numbers to loan and shift as well as contractors available. This means a lot of meetings to figure out how to do it and not violate contracts also and what they can get away with in loans wink wink nod nod.

In recent years I have yet to hear of someone being turned down. They will bleed out the ones left if they can avoid paying for benefits for those asking/willing to go.

Maybe they figure that stress will make it easier for them to volunteer the next go around.

Not a word. Our MRO waited one day before calling and asking me (the intended target) what i was going to do because the VP wanted to know if i was leaving. Let me know asap when you click yes. Couldn't wait for an answer. BUT now we sit and wait.
I personally have been told three times "I will have an answer tomorrow" but tomorrow never comes. Typical Century Stink. Can't even tell the truth about getting rid of people. In such a big hurry to see who's leaving but then stall and stall to keep you guessing.

My take is they are hoping those interested just get tired waiting and quit, so as to not have to pay severance.

I was told from a reliable management source, they got way more volunteers than they expected and they are scrambling to line up contractors. It was thought we might even get the boot by this coming Friday by none SRO who says they want us off the books asap.

I know this whole thing has alienated a bunch of guys. However there are a few that no matter how bad it gets, refuse to admit to themselves this puppy is going down.

It will be a harsh wakeup call for them. All you can do is wait them out and hope to god they let you go and put you out of your misery.

Nothing official till June 12th. Almost 1/2 my team said they put in for it (of course just going by their word) so they may get more volunteers than expected. The payout seems decent enough not to try and get it.
