Thread regarding IBM layoffs

I'd be happy to trade with somebody

I think this offer is much more generous than some of the previous ones (wasn't it one month just a year or two ago, just with longer notice?) And I've been wanting to leave this place for a long time now. Not sure why I wasn't selected, but I wish they gave us an option to volunteer.

Remember they previously gave 90 days notice and 30 days severance. All they've done now is reverse that, so it's the same 120 days. And getting more severance instead of salary gives you less time to figure out a way to max out your 401k for the year (assuming you are able to retire and get the match).

The medical offer may be better, IF it's a year year of subsidized medical before a year of subsidized COBRA kicks in. But I'm not sure if that is true.

Sure, i'll trade with you. How can we arrange that. You can have my layoff package and I'll take your job. Sounds easy-peasy.

I would say your performance is better than theirs or your salary is less. Generally comes down to value you bring in weighing up on who to cut. And then there’s times pretty much everyone is equal and it’s a lottery.
So even if you volunteer, your manager might prefer you over someone to stay in the value you add.

As others, I have made this request known loud and clear with my manager. This 30-90 is about the best IBM is going to give anymore and would have been satisfied with it. I feel bad for those that got the hit unwillingly when there are those of us with our hands up. Certainly some of these people could have retrained to our roles. Makes no sense.

I had mine conversation on the record about leaving with manager and HR last week. Still waiting for the answer. Honestly I was persuaded to stay, so I don't think that even management have full idea what is going on.

Yep. Have an off the record talk with your manager. Most have some say in the names put forward (even when they say they don’t).

Obviously these are not done and there will be more. You should have a discussion with your manager telling him or her that if you were to get RA’d that it would not cause you the same amount of hardship as it would cause someone else, and leave it at that Believe me managers stress over the selection and list reviews and this would make it a win win win situation (you, mgr, saved person)
