Yes, it's all very sad, and I mean that. But until IBMers wake up and become more collectivist, the RAs will continue, unless IBM makes a remarkable come back, which don't count on. IBM is full of individuals each of whom is certain that they are God's gift to technology. Back-stabbing of peers and intense s—ing up to managers and team leads is rampant. In such an environment, collective action is doomed and consequently RAs thrive.

A union won't help much with layoffs. At best it'll just ensure that the packages are consistent or a little fatter. When the company is dying and falling behind the competition, what do you expect.
Agree with OP 100%. But most IBMers in my location (town was built on unions) are against them!
There will never be a pity party for at will employee's who are RA'd. They agreed to those terms.
@evu - don't delude yourself. You'll find those "great people" will suddenly treat you like a leper if you're singled out for redundancy. As kcf says, a significant number of the remaining people at IBM are only there because of their skills in sycophancy rather than technology.

There’s nobody in my business unit that I know who thinks this way. I work with great people, just for a has-been company.
