Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Reinvent yourself starting right now

If you lose sleep and find yourself depressed about your job. Then take charge of the situation and reinvent yourself. Start by creating a resume that is no longer than 1 page. Ask yourself these critical questions; what type of work, projects, etc make me feel good when I’m doing these things. How much income do I need to support myself and matches my education and experience. Am I willing to relocate to a different city for the right opportunity. Then target companies where you feel your qualifications will be attractive to thos making the hiring decisions. Practice a 2 minute verbal presentation that answers who you are, what experience do you have, why did you leave your past employment and what skills are you bringing to this company. Be positive, smile, and have a personality that is contagious. I wish you luck and just know that you will be successful in finding the new career for the new you.

November 2013 the company laid off 570 store associates, flipping the 80% full time / 20% part time model. The move helped “deliver the hassle-free shopping experience that our customers expect.” Articles appeared in publishing and college retail news media that spoke of a company that had lost touch with it’s customers and loyal employees. The family business grew so large their legacy was trashed and left behind. The May 2014 full bonus check included a letter that celebrated the first step in becoming an omni channel retailer was complete. Six fiscal years later the strategy has not changed, nor has the hand wringing and utter disbelief posted here. Breaking free or sticking around to complain another day here is a conscious choice. Age is a comfortable excuse, take it from some of the company’s former execs who found positions in their 60’s. Come join us on the other side there is life here!

50 is not that old, plus companies are finally understanding the value of ‘mature’ employees.

The smarmy senior management at Follett count on you having low self esteem. That's how they cut pay to already underpaid staff when other companies are paying bonuses to those that keep working. Just remember, they have NO loyalty to you. When it suits their purposes, you'll be gone.

I am 50 years old. 20+ years of retail experience. Before Follett, I did office work and worked for human services organizations. Sure, I can apply for office work in my area and even sign up for a temp agency. But who is going to hire my old a$$?

@your online friend, that is excellent advice. Take charge and find something better. I left on my own accord last year and let me tell you, I am so much happier. There is life outside of Follett.
