Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

2 weeks pay for furloughed employees

Has anyone received their two weeks pay? Was it mailed or direct deposit. I thought I would have received it today but didn’t.

This thread is another reason why BN deserves to go out of business. Why are you people loyal to them? They have hurt you guys in horrible ways.

You sound like you were already unhappy working there, you should of left, now that’s your problem not mine(: they never treated me or my coworkers like sh– that’s probably just you because of the nasty person you seem to be.This post was talking about the FREE two weeks of pay not to argue with someone who’s anonymous and obviously has issues going on and should of left if you didn’t like your job. I hope you get everything figured out and I’ll have cherry flavor with my “ Ignorance“ thank you again!

And I will continue to work for a company that can do that for their employees and have a kool aid while am at it thank you!

And you keep working for a company known for treating their employees badly. And when they do you dirty you can tell everyone how glad you are ,to be without a job ,because of such a “great “ company.
The only relevant thing -What flavor Kool Aid do you like to wash down your ignorance with ?

We are using this forum for that for which it was designed - to share ideas, thoughts, opinions, information, etc. We are under no delusion that this forum is the endgame. So go away with that nonsense. And regarding our furlough/layoff/whatever-you-want-call-it payment, I want you to take that cavalier attitude and apply it to the $1200 relief check that YOU didn't work for in the event that YOUR check does not come through. YOU might have money to give away or leave on the table - I don't!

First of all no is talking about what you actually worked for. You should get paid for that no doubt. The two weeks their giving their employees free money that you didn’t actually work for and just sit at home that’s where you guys need to chill the f— out. Calm down and contact HR you keep coming back on here to solve your problems. And I will continue to work for a company that can do that for their employees and have a kool aid while am at it thank you!

It’s ok with you that you don’t get paid what you’re owed ?
BN must love you as an employee.
They’ll use you? And you’re grateful?!
Do you work off the clock too?!
Here, have some more Kool Aid .

This is for you comment-ers who think it's okay for BN to cheat you out of your hard earned pay because, well, everybody's doing it; or BN is a struggling company. Listen, if all the cashiers were stealing money out of the registers, do you think BN would say what you mo–ns just said? And as for being a struggling company, well, maybe if you stopped hiring CEOs every other year, and then firing then with million dollar exit packages, you might be in better shape. I don't care about YOUR problems.
Pay me what you owe me! A debt is a debt!!!

Lol it is better than nothing, in my opinion. Lots of companies are doing the same to their employees. We are not the only ones who are going to be struggling. It is a job, it is part of life, no one planned this. Barnes and Noble is a struggling company. You should know this, since the first thing they teach is how to upsell.. yeah it is pretty sh–ty what they are doing to their employees but it is not like they are the only ones doing it. They can not afford to pay for everyone at cost. I am sorry that I am grateful for getting paid for not working for two weeks and you feel entitled to more than that. I hope you stay safe in this and stop being self-centered and realize Barnes and Noble is not the only company doing this. No need to reply back because it doesn't matter anymore. Contact HR if you have a problem.

Really? You’re grateful they’re willing to do that for their employees?!
Multi million dollar company & You’re grateful they’re paying you less than you’d usually get? They “Furlough” their employees. With No guarantee of rehire? When this is all over I hope you find a job that truly appreciates you.

I work in South Cali and got furloughed and have received my additional two weeks of pay and it’s only if you been there for a year or more if not you will only receive your paycheck from the days you worked according like you usually do. I got mine direct deposit it was a less than what I make but it’s honestly better than nothing...and I am grateful that they are willing to do that for their employees also you should receive once you stop working. It will come in two separate payments for the two weeks not together. I contacted HR and they explained it to me.

They wouldn’t be treating you like that if they still considered you employees that they were bringing back when they reopen.

I also only received one week’s of pay from them, even though they owe me three weeks of pay.

I am part-time and also received one week's pay from 3/29-4/1. They skipped the week of 3/21-3/28. Time to call HR.

It sounds like it is time to file a lawsuit against them to get lost wages. There are lawyers that will take the case. Good luck.

There is money coming tomorrow, as the paycheck is visible
in the online oracle.

I was told I can’t get paid for my vacation time because they prorate it and I don’t have enough. I have less than 30 hours. Also was told my first furlough check will be on April 24 and second May 1.

If you are not getting your check then why are you not calling HR?

You don't get paid for 2 weeks and you don't call about it?

The time wasted writing on her could be used to dialing a phone.

Nope. Still haven’t gotten a thing. No communication except for a call from a DM (who wasn’t even my DM) telling me the stores were closing and I’d get 2 weeks pay. That was 3/23. It’s 4/8. Still nothing.

Sir James sounds very optimistic.

Relaying stores and changing fixtures.

I guess he has to re-hire all the furloughs.

So, can you collect unemployment when furloughed like after the 2 weeks pay is over?

Because, let me tell you, that unemployment stimulus check is going to be your standard pay plus an additional $600 on top. That is probably almost 3X what you made a week at B&N.

Sorry, but you guys are going to have to wait. BN is working out the financial details for the woman who sued them for age discrimination when they fired her last year for no reason. They are in private settlement right now.

Did anyone else from the corporate office at 120 or 122 get furloughed? I'm from corporate and got furloughed.

The latest from Sir James, in case you haven't read it yet:

Dear all

We end a truly dreadful week. The furlough of so many colleagues is painful in the extreme, most of all of course for those who are furloughed. It is an action that we have taken only because of the extreme circumstances in which we find ourselves and we will all be hoping that it is for the shortest possible duration.

You will know that most of our stores are closed to the public and it seems likely that the few that remain open may shortly be required also to close. Notwithstanding the success of BOPIS curb-side pickup and a dramatic increase in sales through BN.com, our revenues have declined in an unprecedented manner. Cost elimination of the most rigorous nature is unfortunately imperative. I have myself foregone all salary and benefits since the end of February.

Our store colleagues endure the most trying circumstances. As you are aware, we have furloughed those with more than 6 months tenure, and very sadly laid off those with less. Our DCs continue to work at close to capacity whilst radically changing their working practices to ensure they may work safely. Every part of this business has responded with discipline and sacrifice, for which I am both truly grateful and have the greatest respect.

None of us know for how long our stores will be closed. We are fortunate in this dark circumstance to have such confidence in our long-term future. We enjoy steadfast support both from our owner and the publishing industry. This allows us the silver lining to use the absence of customers to re-lay most of our stores. It is a project we had otherwise intended to work through over the next 18 months to two years to minimize disruption to trade, moving bookcases and furniture, and improving visually our stores with better fixtures. As well as the physical moves, a team of booksellers in each store will work through all our book categories. We aim, to the best of our abilities, to direct an appropriate allocation of space and the best possible backlist assortment. This is an exercise in bookselling curation that is very long overdue and which we hope will improve dramatically the quality of our bookstores.

This is a time of extreme professional and personal disruption. I am deeply appreciative for the professionalism with which you have all responded. We will emerge a very much better bookseller.

Thank you all and may you, and your loved ones, stay safe.

Furloughed (sounds like a fancy way of saying, fired.)
You get 2 weeks pay ( sounds like severance pay)
You get the balance of your vacation time (sounds like cashing out all your chips)

Where are the stories of people getting fired/layed off and stores closing? I'm still waiting for BN to go out of business.

Patience-
Not all stores will reopen-
Not all “furloughed” employees will return-

They should be direct depositing or mailing a check weekly. Hourly paid employees are paid weekly. Same would apply to your PTO like accrued vacation time. However, how many of you found in the past working for B&N that often you'd come back from time off and find out they 'forgot' to pay you for the time? And then it had to be corrected at the store by a manager.

Hourly employees (booksellers, etc) are paid weekly, I was told I'd be paid 15 hrs for this week and 15 hrs next. I guess I just assumed I'd get 2 checks, but maybe it'll be all next week.
Would have been nice if they had been more specific in the phone call or letter.

If you're "normally" paid every two weeks, the next pay date is, I think, April 10. I imagine furlough pay would appear then.
