Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Can they get away with this?

Can Barnes & Noble really use this as an opportunity to get rid of so many long-term employees with no severance and no chance of returning (we all know that reapplying is a joke?)

Is there anything that can be done after all of this is over to make them reverse these decisions?

I am constant contact with current employees. (including a couple of managers)

So, don't dismiss all of it.

Keep in mind that former employees have no valid information to offer,
in regards to the status of current employees.
Unless current employees are still friends with former employees ( shocking, I know) and tell them everything that’s going on.

Ahh, you'd be wrong.

It’s also important to note that booksellers are being laid off, not furloughed.

It's important to note: Persons on furlough are not terminated.

No one foresaw the current situation, and Mr. Daunt was placed in a very difficult situation, as were
those currently employed.

Please disregard conjecture & gossip, posted by former staff.
Furlough is not termination.

One doesn't have to go in to details but simply put people on alert. That would go a helluva lot further than telling me my job is safe when you know that NOT to be the case. I'd be p-ss-d of too!

Thank you !

None of this surprises me to be honest.

I really feel for all the hardworking and talent folks who’ve been throw to the wayside by all the horrendous decisions made by the previous leadership.

The former B&N was run by Finance MBA’s who only cared about bottom line numbers, and making those who out their heart and soul in the company expendable.

Adding to that was the complete ineptitude of the Technology leadership, and the inability to put in to action any sort of strategic initiatives that added any value. Rather, they were to busy throwing away on the Palo Alto campus, which delivered nothing but more failures.

I feel for you all, but don’t blame who runs this sinking ship now. Blame those who consistently shot holes in ship with their poor decision making while BN was still public.

The people who were "fired" 2 years ago are entitled to their anger. What's more is that I can also understand managers not disclosing the fact that certain employees would be let go. Exercising discretion is a necessary, if not legal, requirement of the job. However, in the interest of good faith and simple respect for your employees/friends, it is possible to "warn" them that cuts/layoffs are coming. One doesn't have to go in to details but simply put people on alert. That would go a helluva lot further than telling me my job is safe when you know that NOT to be the case. I'd be p-ss-d of too!

How is being mad that your Mgrs knew for months, turned into spreading false information?
They expected us to be honest in our positions but yet they spoke of not replacing positions should they be vacated, but our jobs were safe, lying the whole time. I spent time with my manager out of work, came to my home, had dinners together. A heads up would’ve been nice . I certainly would not have ratted them out. Would’ve just found another job , gave notice and would’ve felt there was some honesty. So, yes , I have an issue with my old mgr. I haven’t spread any false information.

You do realize that giving what is going on corporations/companies across the country and world are doing this. As someone who was in the BN lay-off, I’m embarrassed by the past employees who have no understanding of business-you do realize that our layoff was more generous than other corporations have given. Corporations lay-off large amounts of staff all the time. Thinking managers should have leaked the secret to us in advanced shows your lack of ethics. I never felt they should have...why would I want someone else to get fired for violating that. You need to stop with spreading false information on this site and grow up.

Given their past practices, even with a new owner, just firing employees is what they do. Last time there was a severance because they tried to maintain their facade of an image.

Just let them go out of business. They deserve to fail this time. I can't wait for them to shutter all the stores forever
