Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

THIS is what’s happening.

Most everyone fired ( can say “laid off” all they want) this cafe MANAGER , told she’ll hear from them if want to REHIRE her !

I was laid off on Saturday by an unknown area manager from New York headquarters. Not even the courtesy of a call from my store manager. To this day I have yet to hear a word from my “ team” of managers. I was a cafe manager and worked open thru close ALONE in the cafe for the last week as all other employees hours were cut. I was told I was being laid off and can pay 725.00 a month in cobra health insurance if I want to be insured. I was then told to file for unemployment, offered no payment for benefit days I had accrued in the 4 months I have worked there, and given no sick pay at all. They then told me the store manager will call me when they are ready to reopen and if they so choose to “ rehire you” you would be considered a “ new” hire and have to wait another 60 days for your health insurance coverage to kick in and the full 6 months again before you can use any earned benefits. I have never seen such horrible treatment of employees and this is coming from “ the largest bookseller in the country”. Dont bother calling me Barnes and Noble when and if you reopen. The hedge fund company that now owns Barnes and Noble are most likely going to file bankruptcy and cut their losses anyway once the pandemic is in the past,

Amen! Barnes Noble has absolutely NO loyalty to their employees. Old Jimmy Daunt can turn around Waterstone's but he can't implement simple cohesive message on paying furloughed employees. He's a real genius

It’s also important to note that booksellers are being laid off, not furloughed.

It's important to note: Persons on furlough are not terminated.

No one foresaw the current situation, and Mr. Daunt was placed in a very difficult situation, as were
those currently employed.

Please disregard conjecture & gossip, posted by former staff.
Furlough is not termination.

This is the post on BN Facebook:

I will never shop at a Barns & Noble again.
A friend who works at one of the Barns & Nobles on the West Coast who went to the ER a few weeks ago and was told she had Corvid-19, but because she was not bad enough to be admitted they were not going to test her.

She missed a few weeks of work due to how amazingly sick she was. Her regional manager decided she was not going to tell employees as she was afraid they would not come to work. She was also told she had to come into work the day after she went to the hospital and was told she has Corvid-19 and that her regional manager was not going to tell corporate. Today her disability claim was denied and she was let go.

If this is how you treat your employees in a time of need I will spread this as far and wide as I can and I will never spend another dime with your company ever again.

Part time bookseller in the Chicagoland area, got a letter 2 days ago about being put on furlough. I can still apply for unemployment. I've been w/BN for 2 1/2yrs.
I think theres a 50/50 chance of the store I work at reopening.

Daunt says in his first letter that anyone under 6 mos was laid off. That means no severance or benefits. So, yes, you were fired. That was told to you before all this griping.

Now where is this letter to FULL TIMERS ?

Just a follow up to my earlier post regarding my “lay off” as a cafe manager....no letter ....or further contact regarding health insurance coverage has been received on my end and it has been a week today. I had only worked for Barnes and Noble for 4 months and feel sorry for the long term employees they have not been treating right for years.... shame on you Barnes and Noble for not taking care of the people in a crisis who have been the lifeblood of keeping your business running all these years. Stay safe everyone.

Won't believe they sent out a letter unless it is reprinted here. What letter to full-timers? Show it. I didn't get one. So many misdirections and fictions written here.

is this also happening to salaried staff? Stores & Corporate? If stores are not open, there is no income.

No, the Hedge fund is making out like the crooks they are. All the money they are saving from not paying ex employees are going straight to the dirt cheap stocks on the market. When everything rebounds they will have made billions and Barnes and Noble will be no more.Everyone p!ease take care of yourselves, stay in and stay safe.

They will not reopen stores that aren’t making them enough money.
And that, is most of them !

All you people that was glad it wasn’t you in 2018. Now it is.
Hope it happened to those lying managers who KNEW in advance and let all those great career employees get fired. THAT was the beginning of the end for BN.
