I just walked the lay-off bridge. Thank goodness I can enjoy Christmas for the first time in forever. Now just that ‘little’ detail about dismal personal finances and lack of immediate job prospects.

Great thoughts and suggestions! Appreciated more than you know.
I'm so sorry. You will be okay. Your stress might be different, but it will be okay. I was laid off over a year ago. Everyone reacts differently, and my reaction took me by surprise. I was happy! I realized how burnt out I was from working for a company with no direction and no trust. My family reviewed our finances, and I decided to retire early. I made it my job review our budget and look for innovative ways to save money and couldn't believe how much we spent on non-essential items. Good luck to you!
Do it! Enjoy Christmas!
I was laid off in 2018 as part of a facility closing. I was fortunate enough to have had 4 months between the announcement and my exit date. I was also fortunate enough to have lined up a new job before my exit date. I was also fortunate enough to have been able to choose my exit date. I was asked to consider a position in another facility, but wise enough not to accept. Most people aren't that fortunate.
Being employed for nearly 15 years, I was fortunate to get over 4 months of severance. I hope the same for you. Take advantage of the career counseling and resume services, if Mattel still offers them. Onward!
How poorly does having been laid off reflect on a job applicant? In a way, perhaps the OP is fortunate to have been laid of when he has. Not only is the Trump administration giving out an extra $600 a week in unemployment, due to this whole virus think, having recently been laid off may not be as much of a red flag as it might be otherwise.
Good luck OP, come back in a few months and let us know how it's going.
Severance is calculated based on years of service, how much you make, and if you’re over 39 years old you get extra for each year greater than 39.
Here are names NOT to drop when you go out in the big bad world RD, AT , CK, JE, CD. Can't deliver, evil or worthless ( jury out) , has-been, crooked, see #1.
Congratulations! You are going to be ok. You are. Take as much time as you can afford to breath. Wholeheartedly agree with a prior poster that what you did for Mattel is NOT what you need to do out in the real world. In fact, Mattel is such an archaic messed up machine that you almost certainly need to rely on your skills vs your old job description. The biggest hurdle to get over is having worked for Mattel. Every networking conversation or interview starts with why did you stay, how did you survive, why didn't you leave? I'm serious. Have those answers ready as much as your basic interview answers. Interviewers want to know if you were 'one of them.' So many companies and individuals have been screwed or disappointed by Mattel that odds are pretty good that if you're staying in the industry, that you're talking to someone with an ax to grind. But you are lucky. It's the people who will end their sad careers there that I feel sorry for because when they walk out gray and grizzled they'll realize they waited far too long.
I left Mattel a few years ago to join technology.
You don't realize what you've been missing until you actually leave, on your own or not.
Depending on your skills (not necessarily the position you were just let go from) there could actually be many opportunities. Project Management, Project Development, coding, writing, all powerful skills in the world I work in now.
If not, take the time to learn new skills while you reflect and seek options.
Flex your "entrepreneurial spirit" too as you can now do whatever you want!
It's hard at first but you'll look back at this as a moment of growth, in time.
All the best!
I'm curious as to what the severance if any is at this point. Def. use the resources and read all the documentation. If there was a severance mattel has an insurance policy so that when yours expires if you haven't found something else you will be able to activate the insurance and double the length of your severance.
It will get better... from experience! Been through it. Use the career placement services - they were excellent. You won’t realize how stressful it was there until you get to your new job. Look broader than toys. Mattel is a sinking ship. Good luck!
Sorry about your luck. Hopefully things work out for you.
If you work for Mattel, you'd better have at least 6 months of living expenses in rainy day saving.
Never forget, if you are a Mattel employee, you're sailing on a sinking ship and they're literally throwing people overboard in an attempt slow the capsizing.
Things do not look like they'll be improving anytime soon, next time it could be you reading this. Prepare, plan, assume the worst.
Sounds like an awful company to work for in the first place, good luck.
Did they give you a Career placement place to take classes. Do this to get help on your resume and interview hints. This was very helpful.
