The money that Belk owes vendors and for rent is no joke, they are in serious trouble, just regional managers and a few select store managers know how bad it really is.

No A/C sounds like our store, where the chiller conveniently broke down during the summer for, like, 5 years straight. But it was okay, though, because a manager got to hand out mini bottles of non-cooled water to customers and associates (but only if you re-e-e-eally needed it!).
Two heat related incidents included:
1) An associate known as "Speedy Gonzales", a naturally hyper and fast-moving guy who fell out from heat exhaustion. The store manager's response was to insist that we all brought a bottle of water to work to keep with us– not soda, though, or coffee, she says, since those are manager privilege, only (note that this rule would be randomly enforced as the store manager roamed around munching cookies and s—ing down Starbucks(TM) with her cronies).
2) Young lady merchandiser/freight handler passes out in the restroom in the middle of vomiting from overheating while working a truck. The associate who went to check on her was scolded by an STM for wasting valuable time in the restroom checking on someone who, clearly, would be okay since she had been laying down on the job long enough. The upshot of all that was that you don't need to stop working a truck to "check on" anybody– just tell a manager and whoever is in trouble will be okay after they walk it off for a minute.
And on a side note, don't get me started on the poor man who got a hole knocked in his head from a steel freight brace.. The man is bleeding all over himself, the store manager screams at him for leaving the accident area as we get him in a wheelchair to meet EMS, and the dern visual "manager" asks him if he "wants a cookie?"!
I am so glad to be away from there!
Don’t forget no A/C. Our store was like a sauna.
Something fishy was going on way before covid19, some stores had issues with the Power cutting off and with the company credit card being declined. Covid just made this issue much worse
Belk has been in arrears on bills before covid
Commercial real estate owners aren't collecting rent from a majority of their tenants. It isn't just Belk. COVID is doing a number on everyone.
Toys R Us went through this exact same thing, and where are they today?
I think employees know something has been happening for a while now.
