Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

You need to be able to play the game your management plays

To the person saying "how hard is it to stay out of the bottom 4%" It's not so simple at Mattel. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: if you don't fit in to whomever is in charge of your Mattel destiny, you are in trouble. There are PLENTY of people still at mattel who've lasted for years but hould have been gone a long time ago. But somehow those people have found a way to be in good standing even though their work is c-ap, they're under-qualified, lazy, or a pain for others to deal with. It's up to the management you work under: what type of person they like, what their rules are, etc. What's most important at Mattel is being able to play the game your management plays. And no I did not get laid off or fired, I left on my own terms because I was tired of that c-ap.

Couldn't agree more with you, @dgvd+14BTgOJs.

With the current economy the dead weight will surely have to be laid-off at long last. It's happening right now across America. That person who used to talk on the phone to their friends all day, but their boss loved them and it was 'political' to keep the boss happy? They gone as of this week. They survived the 2008 recession, but this time it's different, this time it's for real. The ONLY people who will survive will be those who can prove they can successfully work in a remote environment while adding value to the company.

Mattel fires older employees because they suffer under the delusion that older employees have lost tough with technology, competitive pace, etc.... The reality is that the leadership itself is the group that's out of touch but they have to hold someone else accountable vs themselves.

Play the game? So we should all be taking credit for other's hard work, throw others under the bus, blame others for our own mistakes?

Yes. That is exactly what you should be doing.

Play the game? So we should all be taking credit for other's hard work, throw others under the bus, blame others for our own mistakes? Excuse me, while I take another selfie with a B-list celebrity so I can post it on my social media. This seems to work really well for some.

Europe is the worst. A bunch of Back slapping half wits who have zero credibility or talent. It’s a rat filled ... with stupid rats

Were all a– kissers which is why were still here. Except this guy. Whose a genius apparently. Mattel is a JOB. Not matter if you’re over 50 or a newly weaned Millenial. No company, including Mattel gives one sh– about you. Kiss a– or be like this guy. Get another job where you actually enjoy the a– you're kissing. That makes the difference! Screw Mattel!

Prior post has put his finger on it. Bear in mind readers that 'urgency required to carry the company forward' means you must have a mindless tolerance to impulsive, tactical decisions, must be resilient enough to endlessly re-do your work at the whim of a pretentious leader, and must receive all of their ideas, no matter how small or worn, with enthusiasm. Truly, It's less about age. It's more about how far you've sold your soul. Some of the biggest a$$kissers ARE over 50.

It’s 50/50 whether senior employees are making more. On large, employees are all compensated very well. But new hires, younger, are usually hired at par salary ranges. It’s less a salary discussion re over 50, then a happy hour discussion. Who do I want to hang out with. It’s great the millennial poster recognizes this, as it’s your inevitable future/cautionary tale.
That being said, if you present yourself as tired and out of energy to take on the urgency required to carry the company forward, age is no factor. You need to be cut in a reorg window.

My manager was a joke. She didn't do anything and bragged about it. She's still there.

If there is one thing Mattel is good... is sending the wrong message ... on a lot of topics. Wrong about shareholder value, profits, and a sh()loaf others also.

200 VP’s, and how many SVP’s, the management is egregiously top heavy, and for what reason? Do you really think these SVP’s have been working their full days? With UNLIMITED vacation time? ha!

As a younger (Millennial) employee I've witnessed a shameful amount of age discrimination during layoffs. I suppose you could make the argument that layoffs are cost saving measures and older employees inherently get paid more, but it still seems like a garbage way of rewarding those who've dedicated a greater portion if their career to the company and a terrible message to send younger employees.

If you are over 50 you also tend to be toast.

Couldn’t agree with you more, Mattel usually fires the best and brightest. So much talent has been shown the door, but it’s all catching up with them now. Right now the executives are blaming the virus for Mattel’s problems, their day will come in Q3 and Q4.

There has never been a more clique-oriented company. Only keeping who praises and does not present alternative views. Very myopic , fearful, jargon-infused management style that destroys companies.
But, take the check as long as you can, bc you may find the lemming culture has stalled your skill development and “managing” work is not as valuable as creating and doing outside of Mattel. The shrinking market cap is a reality. $5.5B to under $4B and further declining.

It happens.
