Thread regarding Sears layoffs

May 31st

Just got the email that Sears won't open until at least May 31st, and employees have to pay for all of their benefits. Wish they'd admit Sears will never reopen.

@1txc+14HTl3js I am taking home 1,800 every two weeks in unemployment. Way more than I was making on payroll. This boost in money definitely helps... for all those complaining just stop, you’re alive aren’t you?? Things will be okay you will survive and if this company doesn’t give us the jobs back we will find new ones! Think positive don’t believe the negative sh– on here!

It sounds like you will resume paying the amounts you paid when it was taken out of your check. Says active associate rates. Not cobra or portable.
You should be okay because thru July you are probably making more money.
The managers are most likely getting a bad deal but they always think they are better.

Many states are locked down until mid month anyway and the target was memorial day so not too surprising.

@1txc+14HTl3js, this website explains how it works.
https://www.lawandtheworkplace.com/2020/04/cares-act-expands-unemployment-insurance-benefits/

you do have to make sure that you put down that you were laid off due to the pandemic to get the federal money every week. it has to be correct that that's the reason you were sent home. the states check with your employer to verify thats the case. if you dont put that and your job doesnt report it that way, you won't get the federal money.

@1txc+14HTl3js, I make more on the furlough than I do going to work. the federal government is paying $600 per week to anyone drawing unemployment that was let go due to covid19. Then I also get my state unemployment. that amount is different from state to state; for me it's 500.
My wife was also sent home due to covid and she gets the same amount. Her company is continuing to pay all of their insurance premiums though. we'd both prefer to be back working again. and the federal money stops coming in July, so hopefully by then she'll be back to work full time and I'll have found another job (because Sears isn't coming back).

@1haq+14HTl3js why.not? Everyone on unemployment is gettingthe addtional $600 a week from the federal goverment. Thats $2400 a month. Then add your state unemployment which is another $1200-$1600.

$4,000 a month in unemployment and stimulus benefits?....That adds up to $48,000 annual benefits or actually $52,000 using a 52 week calculation......Where in blazes did you come up with those figures????

By those figures, most front line KMart and Sears employees would be making substantially more on unemployment and stimulus than they ever did punching a clock at work.

Perhaps you can provide legitimate sources for your figures?......We'll be here waiting.

I am NOT getting anywhere close to $1600 a month on unemployment.

I have to say that I am disgusted (but not surprised) that they are bucking the trend out there from benevolent companies and aren't covering the cost of Full time associates benefits through the furlough. Especially for those who were encouraged to tough it out these last few months prior to COVID.

Insurance and medical costs have never been so valuable as they are today in this situation. If it were a firing or a layoff for any other reason, it would just be a 'harsh' practice for paid benefits to terminate same month. But during a health related pandemic? Come on! Bordering on cruel.

Forgot to mention that my store manager claims they were kept on with a pay cut. Don’t know if that changed. This was when we first got furloughed.

Why are the Sears store managers still working? What can they possibly be doing? How come they weren’t furlough? They don’t so sh!t on a regular basis anyways! There is no point of keeping them around. I don’t understand how they were kept. There is no business to run and we are being referred to HR for everything.

Have these pathetic Executives at least taken a pay cut? I bet not. Eddie and Leena were already wearing a mask so they were ahead of the pandemic.

Thank you to whomever posted the exact wording. I'll keep an eye out for the bill. Not the right time to have an uninsured family. :(

Unemployment right now is paying like $1,000 a week with both state and the $600 fed money. Thats $4000 a month. I think you can pay for your shït insurance they offer you.

@1fqc+14HTl3js: Employees have to pay their premiums for all of their healthcare needs, or at least this is how I've read it. It was worded very strangly.

It is unclear. Wait for the bill to find out I guess.

So the way I read it is we will be responsible for our employee portion of our benefits, meaning Sears pays their portion. Which was standard with companies that furlough employees I thought? Am I wrong here?

" As we originally communicated, we anticipated the furlough to last at least through April 30. As COVID-19 continues to significantly impact our business operations, we are providing you with important updates regarding the furlough:

We are extending the furlough through at least May 31, 2020. The additional time gives the company the opportunity to adjust to the new normal of doing business and facilitate a safe return to work for corporate and field associates.

Effective May 1, 2020, furloughed associates will need to resume paying premiums at active associate rates for continued participation in medical, dental, vision, optional life insurance, long-term disability, accident and critical illness coverage. Furloughed associates currently enrolled will receive a bill in early May from the Transformco Benefits Center with specific instructions for payment. More details are set forth in the Updated 2020 Coronavirus Furlough Policy located on MPI.

While we realize this is not the news we had hoped for, these are difficult decisions we need to make to ensure the company’s future after the COVID-19 crisis has passed. We expect to provide another update by May 26, 2020.

As a reminder, you are eligible to take advantage of unemployment and other state and national relief programs where available while on furlough. In order to assist you in applying for benefits that may be available to you, please reference www.dol.gov or call 1-866-487-2365.

For additional information, please refer to the Updated 2020 Coronavirus Response Furlough Policy and FAQs, which are posted on MPI. The FAQs are updated as needed. Please send an email to the following with any additional questions: hradministration@transformco.com.

Our continued thanks to you and all associates as we navigate through this unprecedented situation."

Yeah doesn't sound good at all. Also big D–k move for making people pay the premium now on the insurance. Not surprising though because they don't have any money left.
