Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Survival Mode, Entered...

Eeverything is on the table to cut cost and save the company. Commonsense tells you with rigs laying down and being released that not as many people are needed, plus the billion dollar plus budget cut. It is happening to all oil companies and not just Oxy. Pioneer just cut their budget by nearly 50%.

If you are running 20 rigs, and cut it to 10 that kind of says it all. You just need less people to run a smaller budget and smaller company. Nothing will surprise me in this environment. In the industry if you ever think your job is secure you made a huge mistake. Two weeks ago we were getting bonuses, and this week we are working from home with oil below 30.00 and stock below 12.00.

@1uht - you've proven you're no true statistician. People aren't scared of the current death statistics. People are (rightly) scared of the exponential growth of the virus and future potential death statistics. Latest estimates show that around 250,000 deaths in the U.S. is the most likely scenario. That means the odds of you dying from Coronavirus in the U.S. could be around 1 in 1,400 (or about 0.07%). Your odds are worse if you're older or with underlying conditions, and better if you're younger. Yes, most of us will get through this, but not all of us, and that's still a big deal. If most of us don't lose a loved one, we will still likely know people who do lose loved ones. 9/11 changed the world, and that was "only" 2,977 deaths. Those are the statistics I think about.

Agreed; this is crazy times we are living in.
As for the impact of corona virus on the global economy; let this sink in.
World population is 7,771,740,000 or 7.7 billion and only 208,000 total cases of the virus. 0000267 or .00267%.
8,312 deaths. 000001069 or .0001069 % of the population has died.
1 in a million is .000001 or .0001 %.
So the global odds of you dying from Covid-19 is approximately a 1 in a million chance.
Does anyone think this level of panic is justified? I for one do not.
This is a media driven panic beyond reasonable proportions and a prime example of fear-based economic manipulation.
Please don't hit me with all sorts of conspiracy stuff, just think about the statistics for a minute.

Survival mode for employees is out of your control. Oxy will likely be gone within a year.
