Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Is Barnes & Noble Closing because of Coronavirus

I am just a customer and wanted to see if you too are closing all stores?

I hope you open soon. EVERYWHERE. If people are immune compromised, order on line. Stay home. Protect yourself. It is not my role nor is it Barnes and Noble's job to protect you by closing. Keep the stores safe. Suggest safe distancing and the cash registers. Clean clean clean. But don't shut down. You have a business to run. Employees to pay. Customers who want to give you their hard earned money for your service. You are a great bookstore. OPEN UP.

As an employee, we are still open but our hours have been drastically cut. They won't close or lay us off so we can get unemployment. No retail employees are very happy with corporate right now. We have had so little sales this week that we have failed to make payroll every day this week. The managers and only a couple of booksellers are all that work for the entire day. I had to go from 5 days a week to 3 with shorter shifts. As a single mom, that's not cutting it. I wish they would just close the store for now and let us draw unemployment until this is over.

I think you should be happy Barnes and Noble is open and you still have a job!!!!!!!

My daughter was fired from her corporate position even though the employees are working from home. The reason.... bad economic outlook due to Coronavirus. Now she has no health insurance or job!!!!!!!!
At least Barnes and Noble is trying to stay afloat!!!!!

No one is making you work there. You have every right to look for employment elsewhere. And if you were a business owner, you would do everything to save money too. Including cutting labor. American business does not care about humanity, they care about profits. You should know this by now.

As a current Barnes and Noble employee,I am FURIOUS that the store has not closed it's doors. While I understand that corporate wants the business to remain open so they don't have to permanently close stores, the health and safety of their employees shouldn't be so blatantly disregarded. Closing the store at 7pm instead of 10 does NOTHING. We close earlier than that on holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. This company's disgusting lack of humanity is appalling in every way.

“ They will remain open unless the government shuts us down. Employees are allowed to use any balance of paid time off like vacation and then we are being cut off. No pay”
And yet hot topic and bath and Bodyworks is paying their employees. Are you telling me they’re bigger than Barnes & Noble? These days, maybe they are.

They should close! I mean is it really that important to be open? The one closest to me in NJ is attached to a mall (can't access the mall from within the store though). The governor ordered all malls closed as of 3/17 at 8:00 PM. It seems this company doesn't care about their employees. To me, this is a NON ESSENTIAL business. Close it down!

A former co-worker (I was one of the axed 2 years ago) who still works with BN as a Cafe Manager just told me that the owner has stated that BN will remain open unless otherwise mandated by the government.

B&N should close stores now and pay booksellers their normal hours. Every other store has closed.

You can be assured that B&N executives are working from home.

With the company's financial trouble, you can be sure this will hit them hard. Malls are closing here and they are limiting social gatherings. The stores are low staffed already. Anyone gets sick, then forget it. This is going to change the company more than any thing before. Our cafe took away tables and chairs to stop people from social contact. I think I will be laid off or let go soon.

I agree with the others on the "cleanliness" (or lack thereof) at Barnes stores. In 2018, they laid off maintenance staff at all stores, including larger stores. They even got rid of cleaning services to help the maintenance people out, and that made the stores more like pig sties than anything.

As of this writing, BN has reduced its hours of operation ONLY. Retail store employees are still required to show up at the store. The question for me is whether the corporate office workers are also still required to show up at the office. Anybody know?

The cleanliness level has declined over the years.
