Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Furlough

My hubby is an engineer and has worked at NS for almost 14 years. He keeps telling me he won’t be affected by the layoffs. I’m concerned he is just telling me this so I don’t worry. Can anyone weigh in.

Here's the bottom line. The company hates us. Its hard for outsiders to really grasp this concept. The company truly hates us. There is no other company in the world that treats its employees this way. With that being said, if not for the risk of furlough, you're in constant fear of being fired. Its no way to live. Your husband is always at risk of being fired, normally over a grudge with a trainmaster, or a boss trying to make quota.

IMO, if he already has 14 years in, has an area with decent seniority and is saying he will be ok, I would just assume he will be OK and go on with living your lives. Worrying will get you absolutely nowhere.

That being said, you should always listen to basic economics. You never know what may happen that could effect your financial situation, albeit a layoff or worse. NEVER take on more debt than what you know you can afford just in case you get into a pinch and have to take a lesser paying job. If you want something nice, just save up and pay for it with cash. Also if you are worried about money at all, check out The Dave Ramsey show. Lots of good financial info there.

When they take the conductor off through freight, thousand of workers will lose their jobs ! I hope they take ( smart) with them ! No need for 2 useless unions let alone one ! All the technology in the world cannot due the job of a good conductor especially when it comes to high wide freight that needs constant attention! Glad I’m retired, all I can say go down fighting!! Call your local congressmen/ senators flood their inboxes with e-mails make your last stand. God bless !!

Nobody has a definite answer as to the depth they will cut in transportation. They’re pushing for 1 man train crews which will come eventually. That in itself would affect him but then again that could be 5 or more years down the road. A railroad job in today’s world is probably the least stabile as far as job security goes. Anyone working for the railroad should always have a backup plan, bottom line. Good luck
