Thread regarding IBM layoffs

All NA GOM Job Post hiring on HOLD?

North American colleague told me all but critical technical GOM hires on hold for now, and her HR friend said timeline is at least through March.
Anyone have other details?

@cpvo Basically they give you a target for your utilization and if you do not reach that % they will argue that your skills are not required any longer.

What do you mean about people on the bench, i am assuming this is service related and how would that lead to pip

@bnxx Whoah. We keep being told that this is the growth area in GBS yet they continuously fail to innovate. I’m in another pillar and business is struggling. Loads of new executive hires, wonder wtf they are doing if they aren’t generating business. My only hope is to get on a long term project but PM is encountering blockages to my staffing because of the pressure to absorb offshore staff. All around bad situation.

@byxh I could tell you that we have no projects nor anything on the pipeline nor coming up. Management is telling us that we should start looking for jobs as they will have no choices but to place us on the PIP. I'm on the CAS department under GBS.

@beql Which sector/SL? I’m also GBS and I don’t really talk to the people in my SL but I know from team status calls that most are on the bench. No proposals in sight either. Scary times

At least on my department GBS 90% of co-workers are on the bench and four on the PIP and most probable all of us heading to the PIP soon.

Oh yes...the PIP Game. Why layoff when you can fire them. Gotta love it.

Cloud, Red hat do not equal IBM.

This would make sense as there’s no business in my neck of the woods. GBS. Everyone on the bench.

1mmu. I believe you are looking at the data incorrectly. This is IBM dealing with the “legacy” as it always has. As legacy revenue falls so falls the legacy headcount. GTS Primarily, and other divisions secondarily headcount’s will get hit hard, because that’s where the remaining legacy headcount resides. IBM has placed an all in bet with Redhat, and they continue to modify the company to aline with that bet. IBM has stated publicly that their strategy is Enterprise focused aligning with Redhat around legacy enterprise applications. (Eg consult (GBS), modernize, rewrite, cloud deployment/implementation(cognitive), run cloud (GTS). Everything else not included in the above goes THUS layoffs and spinoffs. HW division (Z) and Power (Enterprise) are a cost of doing business as you have to have something unique (think monopoly) to power Hybrid cloud. Power (scaleout) and storage are expendable. Expect this strategy to be rolled out as 2020 proceeds. It’s going to happen sooner rather than later. The layoffs/PIPs have already started.

This is IBM's standard playbook - close the open reqs so no one internal who gets cut in the upcoming purge even has a chance of landing another spot at IBM. Not that they would have been considered once the scarlet letters ("RA") are stamped on their forehead. But, it probably saves IBM some embarrassment (and possible legal suits) when it comes up that they won't retain anyone who has been set to be laid off.

So much for the Red Hat acquisition saving IBM. Clearly RH's been a hindrance and not a bonus.

I heard the same about the GOM (Global Oppty Marketplace). A friend who was watching two or three open positions that he was thinking of applying for were all pulled end of last week. Not sure which day, but I went in now and sure enough, all gone.

IBM is running the same playbook as before. Several senior reps in our organization were put on a PIP last week. They have till End of March to make an impossible number. It’s flying under the radar, But it’s definitely happening

Similar information here: there were interviews scheduled for new hires in the department, with one interviewee even being interviewed a couple weeks ago and then the next week, the remaining interviews were abruptly and mysteriously cancelled.
Get ready. . .

I’m shocked. Shocked I tell you that a dynamic, cloud centric, security specializing, Linux focused company would be “frozen”thru the critical College recruiting timeframe. Next thing you will try and sell me is that they are going to lay-off NAH never happen Good luck to all who may be effected. I think this one is going to hurt, as the new CEO only gets one chance to rightsize the company
