Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Secure your job

If you want some chance at controlling your job, make yourself vital but containing critical knowledge only to yourself. Everything is a process that requires steps, so take control of certain steps so that only you can do it! Important documents? Save them on your computer and not on the shared drive. Program access? Keep them to yourself. We all know how great our IT is.

If they let you go, get the satisfaction of knowing it’s going to implode or be one hell of a struggle without you. Find a way to cripple your department!

Hmmm I view this case as more of a wounded dog thing. He or she in an environment that hasn’t been kind so maybe they just are likely to bark loud and will bite if anyone tries to touch them or take away their bone. Like they have to protect their bone for life or death. You see this a lot with Post traumatic stress syndrome. Once someone is wounded and doesn’t trust, they become very likely to “bite,” if you will. This ensures others stay away..so it’s probably in essence just a super untrusting coworker or manager who thinks everyone is out to take his bone (his job) and therefore has to viciously guard it and appears willing to bite to protect it. Just my take on it. No judgement as I have never been in that situation.

This is the worst advice I've ever seen. If you're reading this post, do not follow the OP's advice.

You sound like a great co worker...I'm guessing you probably manipulate others and by what you wrote are a total narcissist.

They will let you go even if you are vital to a job function. They will just change the job and process to accommodate. Many vital, irreplaceable people have been let go.

lgh+13sTZG4x To the “worst advice ever” poster? Not the worst.
Let people handle grief and angry how they will. Frankly, I’ve been too damn nice all my life [Doormat]. This created extra work and late nights for MOI 😘! Then when I tried to finally stand up for myself- I HAD NO BACKING FROM MY MANAGER. She was more like a ghost. My only regret is not having learned smart ways to get over on the man! Instead, I freaking cared like a clown and for what? A stupid BRAVO?

So you’re telling me that me who is bringing in millions is going to get laid off when they have no replacement to do what I can do?

Sure... piss off hr. You know what I’m saying is scary as hell especially in client based jobs.

Yeah, you’ll be laid off before I do. My coworker is doing the same and getting monthly retention bonuses because he is the only one that knows the process. When you have no one to pass that knowledge to, it’s the company’s own fault. I’m just leveraging it against them.

WORST ADVICE EVER

Baiscally you advised thousands of people what to do to get fired. Those actions are seen negatively and you will be noticed and on that ax list faster than you can imagine.

Agree with this. I don’t think protecting yourself is wrong. If UHC had multiple people to know each part instead of wearing themselves thin and isolating that experience to the few, there would not be this problem.

Take care of your people and they will take care of you!

Make yourself vital to try and secure your job -agree. But don't lower your standards because they did. Have respect in whatever you do.

This is absolutely horrible advice! Don't ever let the actions of others (including your employer) destroy your character! Ethics is not about how you are treated. It is about the type of person you want to be. Personally I will always work hard, with dignity, and honor. Not for UHC, not for my manager, for myself! I know this is terribly emotional for everyone suffering through this. But you are not defined by your job. You are defined by your own actions.

That is terrible, our members and patients would suffer because of that behavior.

Nice post. Most of the departments I deal with including my own are already short handed staffwise and experience wise To the point where Not a single person has time to train others. They’re already hurting themselves! I wish they would try lay offs with my department.

This describes how I have operated. Not on purpose but because of disfunctional management who never crosstrained anyone to do my job. Now I'm responsible for getting replacements up to speed in the few days allowed for this before my end date. "Just give us some notes" they say. Um... right.
I'm sure the crash and burn after I am gone will just be blamed on me.
