This is a transcript of an Earnings Conference Call for Vornado Realty Trust. It says that Vornado bought out the Kmart Penn Plaza lease, which had another 16 years to run, for $34 million.

I went into this store 3 times last month and it was never busy, the food area is dirty looking with crowded and disorganised shelves.
Many of the elevators and escalators were out of use which was a pain on a 3 floor store. When I was in there I did think how good this would be as a Walmart as the layout and much of the store being underground won't lend itself to being split into multiple stores.

penn station was one of the companies largest sales locations for kmart
Eddie must have gotten a good price for the real estate.

There is a Target a block away. New Yorkers don't want Walmart. Every time Walmart tries to open a store, the city council blocks it. Most likely the space will be sub-divided. I am sure Eddie is cleaning up since this space was locked into a long-term lease at 1990's prices.

I bet Target or a similar store made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

I LOVE the pic of that Kmart logo next to the Statue of Liberty image in the one Twitter pic. Needless to say, this was a really unique store.

How could they be closing in Penn Station? This store is always so much more crowded than any other Kmart I’ve been to and it’s in a super populated area without any Walmart competition in all of NYC. This is so sad. I go there every time I’m in penn station. Do you think Walmart will try to move in after Kmart closes?
