Anxiety Caused by Layoffs - Remedy?

Layoffs happen often here and this has started to affect my health, my anxiety level is continuously high. I try to avoid thinking about layoffs, try to avoid discussing, I am trying to be off Facebook where layoffs are discussed (trying to avoid this site too)…
I am having quite a bit of trouble sleeping at night, I wake up, nausea, etc…
How do you deal with this? Any suggestions?

I’m really anxious too. I can’t sleep and I have panic attacks. I’ve been hitting the bottle more because I’m so tense.

I tried short term disability once due to job stress. It didn’t help me because nothing at the workplace changed. I came back refreshed but it didn’t take me long to start having symptoms all over again. Then, I was laid off.

Do you live in a state with medical m-r-j-a-a? I found that it helps with anxiety and insomnia. Also CBD oil as well, comes in capsules too.

Abusing fmla? With the way they’re abusing their workers by overloading them, that is undue stress and a legit reason. I’ve seen people keel over from getting ulcers, throw up, have panic/anxiety attacks, and have insomnia. Those are real physical symptoms from stress and they affect the level of work you are doing, so don’t sit there and talk about abusing it. If people are fed up with their job to use fmla, then they’re probably at some level of depression.

I know the risk of layoffs is casting a cloud over our heads, but I like to get away to alleviate stress. When I mean away, I'm talking vacation away from your home environment. I know money is tight, and I'm a frugal person, so if it's in your means to fill up your car and drive someplace nice and quiet and spend the day there. Maybe go with a group to save on cost. I do my best thinking away from home and I come back feeling at peace. That peace will help you think of your plan B. You may want to wait till they lay you off, maybe you want to find new employment, or start a business. I think your anxiety is from not knowing how to move forward if your let go. My friend caught a Uber/lyft ride from a former UHC director who picked her up in her BMW. The director told her she was ok with severance and unemployment, but she wanted some extra cash so she didnt have to use her severance check.

I never knew that you could potentially use STD for stress. Do you know if it’s covered in MN by our (employee) plan?

Are you in a state with short term disability for medical reasons? Think about a stress leave. You don’t have to tell your manager anything. Hr will tell them you’re out and they can’t say why.

Set a limit for yourself, maybe only check this site 1x/ week so you can keep some awareness.

Put down your phone at least 1-2 hours before bed and read, color, listen to relaxing music, knit, or anything else that makes you feel calm.

Deep breaths, no amount of worry is going to change the outcome.

IF it feels empowering, do one thing each week that helps prepare you for a future job search. Update your resume and your LinkedIn.

Im not an employee at your company but like many others we too are bracing for massive layoffs at my company too.
I am thinking of all of you and wishing you the best. It's highly possible you will look back and realize you were working in a highly toxic dysfunctional work environment. Companies that treat employees this way always are.
If you can, try to exercise...walking even. It will help you get better sleep.

Prepare yourself the best you can. Reduce spending, increase savings. Keep up on your own healthcare as far as your preventive care, etc. Take Learnsource courses to keep your skills fresh. Brace yourself. Because what they do is completely out of your control. Signed...a laid off employee notified yesterday who spent today scheduling colonoscopy and mammogram appointments before I lose coverage at the end of the month.

Oops, I meant melatonin - although more serotonin would help.

Yoga. Magnesium powder before bed. Valerian Root. Serotonin. Downsize your lifestyle.

agree with the others - post for other jobs, melatonin for sleep and even just a short exercise - even a walk outdoors

This website is encouraging. Others suffering together. I’d suggest checking in here and getting support

I would suggest trying to stay off of this website. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen regardless and scrolling through these threads as a current employee is not going to help your anxiety.

Everyone has their own coping strategy. I feel a lot better when I'm doing something about it like actively searching for a new job whenever I get a moment.

And when I get tired of searching for a new job, I feel a lot better learning new skills that will enhance my value to a new employer.

And when I'm tired of both of those, I go do some physical activity.
