Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

15 year employee who never thought about working elsewhere until now

I was not let go today but this is another major layoff recently and I knew people who were let go and they were great employees. I no longer feel that if I do a good job, my job is safe. These layoffs combined with the employee stock purchase benefit cuts clearly show that the CEO only cares about the bottom line short turn and not creating a good culture.

No one is safe. All I can say for those still employed at UHG or Optum is update your LinkedIn and get the resume polished up. Start poking around to see what is out there job wise before you are the one on the chopping block. UHG is VERY top heavy, but to date, you do not see them thinning out executive leadership roles.

Middle management being used to deliver current lay-offs could very well be next on the chopping block. How many directors and VPs does each division need? The infrastructure is like a game of angry birds.

Be loyal to yourself first. Do not attach yourself to any corporation. UHG is not unique in its focus on the bottom line. Attach yourself to your personal mission and attack it no matter where you land. One thing is clear, UHG is not going to think twice about your high performance or business acumen when they need to report to shareholders that they have cut costs.

I was a 20+ year employee who also never thought about working elsewhere, I was let go in July 2019 and like you, I always had high 4 and 5 star reviews and always received performance bonus. You are correct in thinking your job isn't safe, no one’s is.

The UHG strategy of laying off in waves is their attempt to stay under the radar of both federal and state specific regulatory requirements. I can tell you that their actions have already caught the attention of a couple of the state unemployment regulators and is being closely monitored, not sure what will happen if anything.

Best of luck, I hope you survive the layoffs and don't have to deal with too much fall out

ESOP was reduced - 15% discount was changed to 10% discount...and not at the lowest point in the day - at end of day.

I was let go today. Still shocked but glad that the nightmare of this company is over. 20 years and always rated 5 unless promoted.

@eui....that is not hard. Get ready for a bumpy ride. Polish your resume. UHG has been on a war path since May 2019 with layoffs (RIF). Optum will be hit harder in March.

Optum has already been hit hard. 3 let go from our group before Christmas and another 3 today. The majority dedicated, long time employees Those are the ones I know of. In addition, the employees have 2 weeks to train whomever is taking over their job responsibilities. If they don't train them, they don't get their severance.

When Wichman and Witty came on board it was over. You're a little late to the party.
