Prior years, the severance package was offered to those over 50. Yes, age does equal a higher salary when you factor in 2 to 3 % pay increases over 20 years. Regardless of talent, this group was eliminated for cost savings. Age discrimination.....,you bet, but cant be argued in terms of legality as you must sign a waiver in order to receive your severance.

Many at the ages of 30-45, were eliminated. This wasn’t about age, it was who do you know, at least on the east coast side. Home Depot folks were saved at Mtech, jobs eliminated but a position held for them. What’s that all about? The culture has changed dramatically in the last 2yrs. Testers let go because they “don’t know how to code”, since when was that a requirement? It’s best to get out before Macy’s turns into Walmart or Home Depot.
Is there a difference in how colleagues are cut based on union/non-union stores?
All of the older employees kept their jobs where I worked. It was us younger workers who were given the boot. (Early to mid 20s).
Heard it's a pattern where older colleagues were cut even if they had perfect record compared to other colleagues. Might be in the final paperwork handed out!
I believe age discrimination played a large part in the layoff I was a part of. 16 years, great reviews, happy users. So what? Didn't matter. But, Macy's was crafty - they included a few younger people so we couldn't make a case.
I took the severance papers to an employment attorney before I signed them. He told me the only way to bring a case would be a class action suit.
Are they offering it again this year? I was looking forward to it.
This is exactly what happened to the group I was in that got laid off. About 20 people in the room and no one under 50.
