Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

I can also confirm that UnitedHealth Group (UHC & Optum) will be laying off employees ( Aka Reduction in Force or RIF) on Thursday, 02-06-20.

Not a coincidence this is right before RRP. Some employees are on quarterly or monthly compensation/bonus as well. UHG had a mass lay-off in October 2019. They are laying off employees that are high performers (make too much money in that grade level) and low performers. So if you’re mediocre you might be safe. They are eliminating entire departments. Many of the eliminated jobs are being off-shored to Ireland, India & the Philippines. The rest of the eliminated jobs will be split between the remaining employees so you will work longer hours. If you make it past this lay-off I would recommend to update your resume and get out ASAP. I cannot give your exact numbers but October 2019 was 10% of the workforce. Some leaders this round will not have to lay any employees off through attrition (not replacing employees who quit or moved over to another position within the company.) This round could be as high as 15% of the workforce. UHG likes to lay-off aka RIF in waves so the numbers are not so high. The layoffs never make the news because you receive a lump sum severance package and must sign a confidentiality agreement. Good luck to all!

Adding insult to injury, they revoked the $600 in biometrics/Rally for Health, as well as the $300 for HSA incentives from last year.
Additionally, when I attended the benefit cessation call yesterday, I heard from others that their leadership will not respond to their urgent requests either. So it's not just the layoff, it's how they're conducting everything around it.
While many people were truly sympathetic, I could tell there were some people that felt they were immune. I sure hope they don't get picked in in a couple of weeks when they announce the next round.

11/5/19 was a layoff in my old team. Was there 15 years and saw waves of people let go every year. I’m enjoying unemployment. Fear not. Change can be good. More fun opportunities have come up in the last few months than i would have thought. Just need one of them to hatch.

My department lost 20 people total on 02/06/20. Some of them were retirement age and were forced to retire. None of those people are getting replaced.

I can write that I worked for the company just short of four and a half years and I was laid off this morning.
It was devastating and blindsiding. I wish I would have known well in advance.

I am the person who created this post and yes I only post if I know it is a true fact. I have inside sources but can not reveal anything further.

There will be another RIF in March. Optum will be hit hard the next RIF. Once I know the exact date I will start a new new post/thread. Monitor this site as much as you can.

I am the person who started this thread. Sorry I was correct on the RIF date & not receiving an RRP.

There might be another one in March but I am waiting until I have confirmation from my source inside the company.

The layoffs today with a last work day of 2/20 so RRP does not have to be paid. I worked my you know what off all year and nothing. I am a 31 and leaving behind a great team including 2 new hires. All I could do was say sorry for leaving them by text. My VP kept telling us we are getting MORE help. So completely blind sighted. Just got my severance letter and only 11 weeks. This blows.

The bottom line is UHC doesn't care one bit about its employees. It's obvious with their c-appy benefits and next to nothing annual increases. This company is so cheap they'll step over a dime to pick up a penny.

Whomever had the comment saying it was FAKE NEWS, I hope you don't work in E&I. Was just told it is, in fact 10% of the workforce. Good luck to everyone!

Our department on the UHC side was spared this time, since we had a lot of layoffs on 10/02/19. But we were advised from upper management to expect layoffs to be a regular thing. Layoffs will occur once a quarter. This is no way to live. Time to start looking around. Sad day.

Layoffs did not just occur in October 2019. They occurred on a schedule in October 2019, December 2019, and now February 2020. The number is estimated to be around 20,000 employees as of the December action. UHC has done this in waves to alleviate headlines in the paper and on the news. Not surprised to hear about the layoff occurring on 2/6/2020.

UHC further announced in a town hall in the end of 2019, they will hire approximately 10,000 - 13,000 new employees in 2020. No doubt that number will include increasing responsibilities and lower compensation, given they targeted leadership roles in the layoff beginning in October 2019.
