When railroads stopped building their own equipment, they had to do something with all of the machinists, so they made them parts changers
The Real Machinist... surely you all know ... he works in fort worth .... SMH...
Machinist typically operate machinery for milling, CNC Machining, operate lathes, understand the use of and operate numeric controls, micrometers and are fluent in shop math. They manufacture parts and tooling and read/interpret blueprints. The railroads don’t use them because 3rd parties are called upon for those duties due to limited need.
What is a real machinist?
You have never met the real machinist then
You are spot on about the useless grandfathers, keep breathing a few years and you will be one, if you’re lucky.
Foremans
We have jobs go unfilled everyday here at my location. All crafts including foreman. We can’t even work all the units in the house due to not enough manpower. Still all we hear is more layoffs coming.
Units sit for multiple days waiting to get worked. Most of the time you work on the same unit from the day before and nobody has touched it.
Thats great news. The union doesn't do squat. Id rather save the money from the dues and get paid more working non union. As long as your not a lazy worker you got nothing to worry about.
Sad thing is at this point all they are doing is cutting the guys they are going to need when the old heads start to retire
They are likely to cut more Carmen, electricians and machinistin the next set of cuts if they cut in mechanical since they outnumber the other crafts at this point. They’ll also probably hit te&y boards again in some locations, and finally hit signal (I believe I saw a post on here they have started cutting them) and maintenance of way
It's pretty obvious this is from a disgruntled mso, mad that people said they aren't needed.
Anything is possible with this company but since UP wants to become CSX so bad, I'd say if you look at csx, whose been doing psr longer, they still employee IAM and IBEW craftsman.
They’re mechanics that call themselves machinists. I’ve never met one that could machine anything.
Hell I hope so since we dont have mechanics they are machinists. id–t
