Hard-drive maker Seagate Technology said Wednesday it plans to cut about 1,100 jobs, or 2.5 percent of its global workforce, as part of a restructuring plan.

Seagate said the cuts are needed to reduce costs and help the company reach its goal of becoming cash-flow and earnings-positive in fiscal 2010.

The 1,100 jobs Seagate is eliminating are from its worldwide employee base of 44,000. The company said the majority of the cuts would be made in the United States, but it declined to say how many.

Seagate also declined to say how many employees would be laid off in the Twin Cities area, the company's largest U.S. location, with 3,100 employees in Bloomington and Shakopee.

The Bloomington and Shakopee plants already were hit by a January layoff, in which Seagate cut 2,950 jobs worldwide, including 800 in the United States. Seagate's Twin Cities-area employment has dropped by 285, or 8 percent, since September.

The restructuring plan, which is expected to be largely complete by the end of July, is expected to result in about $72 million in pretax charges. The charges will primarily be incurred in the June 2009 quarter and consist mainly of employee severance costs that are expected to be mostly paid in the September 2009 quarter.

The restructuring plan is expected to generate savings of about $125 million a year, Seagate said.

That is so something Dave would say. Blaming the employees for his lack of vision and poor execution while he and the leadership make bank driving the company to its end.

Thanks Dave.

The issue with Seagate, long term, isn't the people who want to share information about layoffs and restructuring, it's the product mix upper management has committed to, probably a half-dozen or more years ago. Probably 20 years ago when it comes to HAMR.

I'm sure there were some fine horse carriage makers 100 years ago too.

How long can the CEO hang on? He's an ops guy without abit of technological development expertise. Not that anything can be done now but his vision for success since he's been at the Helm has been a disaster .

I got let go 2 years ago. (And glad to not be on the layoff roller coaster) What are they still doing in SHK? They've been talking about shutting it down for the better part of 10 years.

Regardless of SHK actual headcount and Dave's buzzwords it is going to be a big RIF. Notebook, MC are gone markets, HAMR is too expensive and IT 4.0 is not going to grow the company to where it once was and most likely smaller than today

Seagate is going out of business because the same people that post on here are our engineers and they obviously don't know sh– about business if they're making these claims. Shakopee doesn't have 600 people and it hasn't for years. The rif will be deep across the company but Dave has already made it clear who is getting cut at the all-hands meeting, you either don't listen or don't go. If your product team is not in IT 4 point triple 0 you are being let go. Goodbye notebook.

It has to be more than 5%. Shutting down shk is 600 people alone
