Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Another year of this

Another year that I have to downgrade my employees from outstanding to successful because my VP and SVP want everyone to be no higher than successful since it will be harder to justify laying them off or having to give them more VCP, which they deserve. I'm told my duty is to the company and not to my employees. Why even have DPMs at all if we can't assign the ratings we want? Why are SVPs dictating the scores of people they hardly know? This just seems so sketchy.

I suspect the plan was that this would anger people and induce some to quit. This reduction would reduce payroll costs without requiring the payment of severance as would be the case for layoffs. Of course, it would have been mostly the highly successful superstars who would have quit, further reducing median staff quality, but that's irrelevant now.

Unfortunately, now that the virus disaster has tanked the global economy nobody will quit in this environment. So now Sabre has even worse financial problems as almost nobody will travel for the next few months. So Sabre will be forced to lay off even more people than originally planned when they can hardly even afford to lose anyone without causing system outages.

Not only that, we can't tell our employees how much merit raise we put in for because the VPs will probably reduce it later.

It has always been this way unfortunately. With this low VCP & merit delays, it only makes it worse.

It has always been like this at Sabre - only x number can be rated outstanding - all based on the Bell Curve. Each department is allocated a dollar sum to be distributed to the various teams. Those below principal get screwed because upper management tend to want to give more to the principals or their 'blue eyed' team members. Been there - done that - it s—s.

The whole DPM process and merit awards is a scam. Outstanding employees are not rewarded accordingly and telling an individual who is outstanding that he or she only has a successful rating defeats the whole objective of the process. If you dont want to recognize people, then dont recognize them, but if you do, then do it in a meaningful way.
