Thread regarding IBM layoffs

ATTN young professionals who think they are being cute by mocking older tech workers...

We were once you. We were once fresh faced young single professionals who had limitless amounts of time to focus solely on our careers and begin climbing the corporate ladder. We too mocked the older generation of tech workers of our day.

In time, you also will become the next wave of middle aged tech workers. Your outlook on life will have changed drastically from this point of time in your lives. You may have settled down and learned about marriage, having children, owning a home. You may also have to deal with financial hardships, health problems, divorce, midlife crisis, death of friends or family members.

But make no mistake, there will be a fresh new batch of young professionals entering the job market who believe they are better, faster, and smarter than you. They will perceive you as old, outdated and legacy because work is no longer your #1 life priority.

Enjoy your youth while it lasts, don't get too c**ky. You will become us eventually.

@iqcq -This is IBM's tactics, if you don't want to move you are considered to have voluntarily quit. They did that with forcing employees to move Dubuque and other sites. They know that you probably have a house, children in school and a spouse that works. That and to up and move to another location with no guarantee of a job in the future. Little to no moving allowances. Most employees won't accept. Another way to get rid of older workers.

Former (MUCH HAPPIER) Littleton ma employee here. Spoke with my former mgr last week. Not good news at all...
This site will be empty at some point this year. Even the youngsters who have their cell phones stuck to their hands (aka millennials) will be out of a job or relocate to TX. The mgrs who have reqs open are being told the location for a potential new ibmer is TX.

These millennials who IBM puts on a pedestal don't know their *ss from their elbow Period.
Plenty of good solid staff there who perform well, but IBM/HR/Finance people are absolute scumbags. Letting these good people (with kids, mortgages, tuition bills) go is heartless.

GE was the first to outsource to India for call centers in the beginning. then it was technical support. After ten years, GE silently backed off this trend. The issues being time zone displacement, communication and inability to get anything worthwhile done, no ROI. Meanwhile GE started preaching the benefits of "outsourcing". The other competitors followed whole heartily into the morass. And GE stop outsourcing.....now who is laughing.

Humility, honesty and respect for any demographic. If you are a younger professional, you should know and practice these traits if you want to carry any integrity throughout your career.

OP karma is a b....
I am knocking on 60. In my youth I never mocked my older coworkers, I sought to learn from them. Sure some of them were 30x1ers - the same year of experience 30 times, never learning and growing yet somehow feeling entitled. Some were absolute gems and great mentors.
Throughout my career I sought to learn and grow. I sought to surround myself with like minded individuals. I mentored the brilliant outcasts and was delighted when they bloomed.
I frankly have never cared what other people thought of me. I am the best me and treat others respectfully and have an attitude of service to others. I feel lucky and blessed and enjoy work, yet I will also enjoy not working.

Any aged coworker can be a PITA which is why most people work remote. Brick and mortar is dead.

@qpm - I'm just waiting to see the exodus from RH being affected by the "IBM ways."

RH is used to raises, quarterly bonus, etc. There's already a mass exodus. Major Solution Architects, members of the Tech Staff (i.e. Moby's look alike but is a former Brit) and those even head of their beloved savior openshiFt (don't forget the F like many do) are running to vmw.

But because they're hiring anyone, literally ANYONE who can barely spell linux (look at the next meeting, most are on macs), you don't notice at first the people who left or those that were laid off. > what layoffs at RH!?! > Yeah....they happened a couple of times since the deal close and more than the management is willing to admit.

The over 40 workers at RH should be shaking in their crocs.

@WZT: The problem with IBM is that its fundamentals are all wrong. Its rotten to the core, and its treated its employees with absolute contempt. So it should be no surprise to anyone, the feedback and commentary you get on this board.

@qpm - Im not seeing this at all in Littleton, MA. Lots of mixed ages here, and the people who do leave are also of mixed ages and various years of service. Honestly I think some people come here just to trash IBM and don't have the facts to back themselves up. Is this company great? Hell no. the brass are all the scum of the Earth, but if you are going to post here, at least post with facts.

You don’t have to worry about junior staff since they are smart enough to leave IBM after their first year with no pay rises. It’s landed India resources that is displacing you at a fast rate.

One day they will look up from their busy work schedule and realize that the thing they've spent the last decade of their life working on is no longer the shiny new buzzword worthy technology they started out working on. But the market will be flooded with young eager and inexperienced people who already are familiar with the newer one and they won't have the time to sacrifice to cram their way through the new hotness to get that next role. Now that they have a chance to breathe the anxiety will start to set in while they too are being berated for being legacy skills despite not being past their prime yet. It'll happen and they won't even know it's happening to them.
