To the person who asked "How do all these layoffs not violate the WARN Act of 1988?" - Post ID: @2vnd+13HRVI3d

UHG/Optum are very good at knowing how to avoid trigger notification requirements, There are exceptions to the WARN Act which UHG has taken full advantage of, these include:

  • If a plant closing or a mass layoff results in fewer than 50 workers losing their jobs at a single employment site;
  • If 50 to 499 workers lose their jobs and that number is less than 33 percent of the employer's total, active workforce at a single employment site;

It is these two exceptions that UHG is exploiting, however, I know that several state unemployment
offices are seeing trends and are monitoring, my unemployment claim was transferred to the Mass Layoff Coordinator at my state office - I just don't know that UHG will face any consequences as they are so adept at working the system

Rumor is the last week of March a huge layoff for all of marketing across Optum. They are looking to drastically clean house and no one is safe. Even if you got a good review you should start looking now for another job.

Appears a lot of instability. Another week of survival. But who know next week, month, year etc... if you like to eat, have heat/aircon, and bed-maybe look else where. good luck!

Looks like were ok for now but tons of reorgs going on right now. This organization is in major flux and the uncertainty is a major reason everyone should be looking at new job opportunities.

I was laid off on 1/2/20, was informed during a conference call on 12/4. I was GL 29, my boss and and their boss as well were laid off and didn't know. It's conceivable that some higher ups don't know. The good news is once I got over myself and started looking for a job, I was presented with 3 offers. My point is that there is life after Optum. Please keep your heads up, this is a very strong job market, everyone I know that was laid off and was ready to go back to work have found comparable jobs.

"compassion" "team work" whatever. It's just corporate American manipulations. As if these are new, this is common sense. This is what the c suites get paid 7,8 figs for???? "compassion" …..wowsers. BTW: they to called us on a Thursday, told us not to come in, they would box up our office, and mail it to us with our last check. Not a good bye, not a thank, script reading and robot voices.

They had a conference call and sht canned us on Thurs, items would be mailed to us. Nice. That's what happens when you have the only country in the WORLD with employment at will doctrine. Sad to read all these lay offs from good folks but it was all about profit. Sickening.

I think it varies each round on whether managers know ahead of time or not. One Director I worked closely with told me she knew of her team’s lay-off in advance and was tasked with doing behind the scenes transition work. She didn’t agree with the lay-off but had to cooperate as her job would be on the line. She tried to help find new positions for as many impacted people as possible.

Another director told me with one lay-off wave, he found out the day of and was told who to let go on his team. He had no say in it and said the person selected was one of his top performers. He did not understand why that person was picked. That same director got laid off this past December, with obviously no warning.

Management knows beforehand who is going to get axed. They aren't allowed to say anything. It's their job on the line. If they don't know then who has been posting the correct lay-off dates here? C'mon now.

Rather than thinking everyone is lying to you, realize that even some senior executives have been laid off in previous rounds without a “heads up”. While some areas are laying off front line where managers & directors MAY be aware, other areas are laying off people without that managerial notification or consultation. In addition, we work in a corporate monstrosity! Just because some haven’t heard of any upcoming impacts in their area doesn’t mean that they’re not imminent, either close by or somewhere else in the organization. Despite some opinions I’ve seen here, not all managers, directors or VPs are scheming and laughing maniacally in a board room. Many of us are riding this wave along with everyone else and making our “what if” plans. I really appreciate those sharing their experiences, whether it’s upcoming actions or reporting on the ground what’s happening/happened. I’ve received more info here than I have anywhere else.

Propaganda town halls is SO right! If I hear them repeating our mission again in one of those or tossing around the word "compassion" like it's a new idea... I will barf AT the highest up exec in the room, I promise.

Creepy is right..... making barely 38K after taxes and the chex mix, gold fish, and granola bars are wearing thin. How about investing in the employees instead of snack train events and propaganda town halls? after all the snack trains.... It doesn't compensate for being paid fairly

Yes, I've heard a lot of talk about laying people off next week at Optum corporate headquarters.

In fact, my boss - who's a VP - told me he was thinking about laying off a direct report because the guy had gone above his head to his boss. (He's no good at his job, everyone on the team dislikes him and he's unqualified and we all know it and two people have spoken up/gone above his head.) I was caught off guard when he brought this up to me and said very little (I'm not even a manager). He went on to also say the guy was "vying for his job" and he told me he'd gone above his head to his boss (which I already knew, the whole team knows). Then he said he was going to lay him off because of all that. Which is called "retaliation."

Anyhow, he works remotely and is coming in to town next week which he didnt tell anyone about. My guess is there will be layoffs then.

We are all hoping it's him who loses his job because he doesn't do anything but it's probably the guy he talked about. Ml
